x8 vs x16 PCI-E: When Will It Make A Difference?

Heya everyone,

Tests have shown that pretty much there's no huge difference between x8 and x16 speeds for PCI-E.

When do you guys believe that the difference between x8 and x16 will begin to be significant towards performance? I'm contemplating re-building my computer from scratch and situate it for as much future proofing as I can. I'm leaning towards a 1366 processor and the ASUS Rampage III GENE.

I will be running SLI, however won't be doing SLI with anything except 460's right away. Don't want to upgrade those until the 6xx series comes out or the 7xx series.

Since the high end cards are showing a couple % difference at x8 vs x16, I'm predicting the % difference will begin to go up within the next few generations.

Anyone else have any speculation?

Well PCIe3.0 has been spec'd and should be appearing on cards soon. We STILL have yet to use all the bandwidth afforded by PCIe 1.0

It will be a long time. You'll have sold your 1366 rig by the time it happens.

Think the same will go with x8/x8 SLI on a P55?

I second this question, since I'm thinking of upgrading to this (or sandy bridge).

on a pci-e 2.0 board x4 is not even a bottleneck. remember 2.0 gives double the bandwidth of original pci-e.

anyone who tells you otherwise is probably selling overpriced motherboards on the side
