Intel HD Graphics?

Thread Starter
I recently picked up an Asus laptop with Intel GMA, the processor is an P6100 ( http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=50175&code=Intel%C2%AE+Pentium%C2%AE+Processor+P6100+(3M+Cache%2c+2.00+GHz) ). I'm trying to see if basic games will even run on this thing, but even games based on the HL1 engine see low (40ish) FPS. GPU-Z says the core clock of this GPU is 370 mhz, but the specs on the intel site say 500, with turboboost up to 667. Any idea why my core is that much lower than what it's supposed to be?

Thanks!

Intel HD graphics are just not meant for gaming. wouldn't matter how high you get the core clocks the performance increase will be negligible

Still, I have an ancient 6+ year old intel GMA which outperforms this one... it can play HL1 games 80+fps. This one barely scrapes 40 fps.

Make sure you are plugged in, other wise the GPU will be downclocked. Make sure you have the latest drivers from Intel too, since the architecture is fairly new on those.

On my GMA x3100 I can plan Command and Conquer Generals pretty well (it gets choppy if I leave it unplugged and on battery). Your chip should be at least twice as fast, at least going from the generation newer then mine to your chip is.

I've had it plugged in and no power saving options are on. Thanks though!

The weird part is I get more FPS in the Source (HL2) engine compared to the Goldsrc (HL1) engine. I average about 50 fps all low in HL2, and i can barely get 40 fps in HL1.

EDIT: If I don't install any drivers and have my computer in an ugly 640x480, firing up GPU-Z gives me the correct core clock of ~500 mhz (503). The moment drivers are installed it's locked down to a 370mhz.

If no one minds, I'm bumping this topic because I'm still having the issue of downclocking when drivers are installed. Also still getting more FPS in HL2 than HL1...

That is an odd issue.

One thing you could try is running with the cord plugged in (so hopefully running at 500mhz) and run the Source benchmark, then close HL2 unplug the laptop, and try rerunning the benchmark and see if the score is different. This will tell you if the chip is downclocking on unplug, and if it is locked at the lowest speed or not.

Also, with the performance difference, it could just be a driver issue.

Hmm...okay so, the GPU underclocking thing is apparently a power-saving feature. I loaded a Blu-ray movie on to watch, and it boosted itself up to speed. Now the real question is, why is it stuck at 370 mhz when I game? And the low FPS in HL1 still doesn't explain itself :|

rather get a i3 with 5650 then a i5 with a intel hd. the overall performance of 5650 is so much better.
