1080p doesn't require a whole lot of computing power, my laptop has about the same specs and it runs HD vids fine. The only problem with a laptop is that if its a bit older it probably doesn't have the HDMI out, or even DVI. You just have to get the right hookups for video, and audio.

The laptop itself should be fine. The only problem I have found using a laptop as a HTPC is the poor wireless network signal from having the laptop under the tv. This can make streaming videos from a NAS laggy. If you are using external USB drives or the ethernet then this is null and void though.

Good luck.

I got wireless N card inside the old dell, has the same download/upload speed as my Ethernet cable, i guess i'll try to place it beside instead of under
