Transfer Windows 7 License

Thread Starter
I bought Windows 7 Professional for my current computer the day it came out.

When I build my new computer, am I legally permitted to transfer it to the new machine or is it "married" to the motherboard?

If you bought it retail (not oem) as in it came in the nice box then yes you can transfer it over.

If you bought the OEM/system builder version, it is "married" to the motherboard. But the installer will likely let you install it anyway even though it's in violation of the licensing.

If you bought the retail or upgrade version, you can install it on any machine that you want.

Edit: Damn, you guys are fast!

i think you can transfer it to your own computer, many people get new motherboards/hard drives and never have any issues

Either one you can. I've done it with OEM before, and retail. It makes no difference.

This is retail. Will I have to "deactivate" it first?

Just because you can do something does not mean you should (see link in my sig)
