Old Pc Recycle

Thread Starter
Hey overclock.net!

First post and first question

I want to recycle my old system and build a HTPC from the components.

MB: ConRoe1333-D667
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, 2x 2.67GHz (Works quite fine)
Power Supply: Some cheap Hama 500 W (overkill...) thingy which I bought because the old one broke, need definitely a new one...
2 gig of RAM (DDR 2)
and 2 HDs 3.5" 1x 80GB 1x 320 GB
And a random midi tower case

yeah so I need a new Power Supply, a GPU (preferably fanless), a new CPU-Fan (I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, which is loud as hell...) and a case...

budget: 200$

Hope that wasn't too much for the first post

Welcome.

Just a few questions first.
One, where you located (so we can suggest what and where to buy from).
Next, what are your plans for it (plan on getting a TV tuner, rip movies, DVD's, Blu-rays, netflix, HULU etc). Any plans on gaming with it, or is it just a pure HTPC?
Finally, what are you planning on hooking it up to?

You have a pretty good base to start with, I find it odd your having issues with your AC 7 Pro, those are usually very quiet coolers. HDD may be small depending on your use.

Im from Europe (Austria).

I just want to watch movies from the hard drive or over the network, We dont have hulu or netflix in Europe :/ No gaming... And I will hook it up to some new TV Im currently looking for one... but it will be around 42"... hope thats enough

Yeah it is quite loud but I think thats just a problem with mine... Maybe I will upgrade my HDDs but I would just replace the 80 GB... Most of my movies are on my new main station...

You're from Europe so, this is how I would make one. Prices are from The Netherlands, but should be about the same.

Your CPU should do 1080P, so DXVA is not needed for the GPU. ATI vs Nvidia: HD 5450 vs GT210, is your personal choice.
  • Scythe Big Shuriken +-30 Euro
  • Be Quiet Pure Power L7 300W +-40 Euro
  • ASUS EN210 SILENT/DI/512MD2(LP) +-40 Euro
  • Nox Media Black Budget 60 euro/Antec Fusion Remote Black 140 Euro

170-250 Euro depending on the case.

Hey, Thanks alot!

I got a pretty good deal: € 235,47 inc. shipping

Could you also give me a recommendation for a TV? I'm looking for something between 32" and 42" for 500€... And what's the difference between LED edge it and LED Local Dimming?

Should I get a 32gb SSD for the OS? Are they worth the high price?

For the TV, go ask in this forum.

As for the SSD, no, for a HTPC, the price does not justify your gains. SSD's help greatly in boot times and programs openeing, but with a HTPC, they are meant to be left on and a few programs are left open all the time.

Beg to differ. I use an SSD on my HTPC and it significantly improved loading metadata in Media Browser. Posters, backdrops, etc show up instantly.

Well, they show up almost instantly in mine with a regular HDD.
I did not say their were no gains, just for the price (since the OP posted a $200 budget), the performance was not worth it. No point in spending 1/2 of the budget on a single item where their are other areas that will make more of a difference.
I for one don't feel a need to spend $100 (yea, you can find deals for less sometimes) for stuff displaying 1/2 a second faster (if that) when my entire build was less than $150.
