Laptop Completely Messed Up

K, a friend wanted me to help him fix his laptop. I obviously agreed.
The problem seemed simple. I booted, got windows boot logo (XP) then got unknown hard error. Therefore, I decide to reinstall, right?
So I try to install XP on it with my computer, since their DVD does not work. However, windows does not even recognize the drive.
Therefore, I told them to get another hard drive.
Got another one and tested it out on my computer. Works. Plugs it into their computer, DOES NOT WORK!
So I installed 7 with it plugged into another laptop. It boots. Horray!
But no, It No Work (with their laptop, that is)! Midway through boot-up, Windows 7 just shut down, did a reboot. I told it to fix the thing (whatever it does on next boot up when previous one goes wrong) Same thing happens WHILE FIXING (Sudden shut down, reboot).
And did I mention that the DVD drive does not work? Therefore, I tried to boot from USB (Linux). No go either. It CAN boot from USB memory (it says so in the BIOS), it just doesn't recognize the USB itself, unlike the DVD and Hard Drive. Says something along the lines of bad media check cable. Then I rage quit and decided to go on OCN for help.

It's a toshiba satellite a100 if that helps. It's old, but is it Beyond Repair?

BTW, Thanks for reading through this whole chunk of text. I tend to beat around the bush.

Sounds like the mobo is on its way out. If the warranty isn't void I'd suggest replacing it.
