Upgrading eMachines T3104 CPU

Thread Starter
Hey guyz, I just needed some help upgrading my CPU for my old desktop, eMachines T3104. I already have a gaming laptop, so please don't tell me to buy a new computer.
Anyway, I have already upgraded its ram from 256mb DDR1 to 2GB DDR1, I have also upgraded the Hard Drive, Power Supply and Graphic Card. For my HDD, I have around 500GB, for my power supply, I have a 400watt power supply, and for my graphic card, I have upgraded from the terribly crappy onboard card to a ASUS ATI Radeon HD AH4650 AGP 8x with 1GB GDDR2 Video Ram and DirectX 10.1 with OpenGL 2.0 support. Now with all these upgrades I have managed to run Tomb Raider Underworld in full 1080p with 60fps 90% of the time. But that old AMD Sempron 3100+ CPU which is slowing down my app load time and general computer speed because it's only 1 core with 1.8 GHz speed. I have been trying to find a CPU upgrade for it, and I read somewhere that AMD Athlon 64 dual core series is recommended for this old pc, and I had a bit of a trouble actually finding them in stores(I don't buy online, only check stock.) But now I found a AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition 2.8GHz Dual Core Processor on TigerDirect with all positive costumer reviews. link:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...575&CatId=4348
I really want to buy this, but before I do, I want to know if it's compatable with my motherboard which is a VIA K8M800 chipset, which uses the AMD64 platform, according to this link:
http://www.ehow.com/list_7374497_pro...#ixzz19ipyZi4y
Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Looks like its a socket 754. The athlon 64 3700+ looks like its the fastest chip you can get for that socket type. Here is some info on the chip http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD...A3700BOX).html

Best bet is probably ebay.

thanks for the quick reply, that cpu looks OK..but it's gonna be huge trouble finding it in stores. My only option is eBay with that... Maybe I should upgrade the motherboard, and start from there?

EDIT: I have found it on tigerdirect's website, but it says that the item is currently unavailable but it also says that the socker is 939. link:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?EdpNo=1366616

Do you think this cpu might work? if so, I can just request tigerdirect to get me one.

They made two different versions of some of their chips during that era. There is most likely a 939 and 754 version of the same model number. Honestly you can get a decent mATX motherboard and chip for around $100 that will vastly outperform what a replacement chip could give you.

Grab this board and this CPU. It will use the DDR2 you already have.
That's just an example. You can of course get a better CPU or even go with a DDR3 AM3 only motherboard. Just pointing out your options.

That link doesn't work. If it's a 939 socket, it definitely will not work with your current motherboard. If you upgrade the board, you'll probably have to upgrade the power supply as well, and possibly, the case, and I wouldn't stop there. Sounds to me like you need a complete upgrade.

Thanks for the reply guyz. I don't know why the link isn't working anymore..but I guess it's useless now that I know that the sockets are incompatible. Anyway, I understand that if I upgrade my motherboard, I will have to upgrade nearly my whole system. Now that motherboard you showed me there...are you sure it will fit in my case or something? Also I have DDR 1 ram atm not DDR2, also I said that I already upgraded my power supply in my first post. Can you check out my first post with my current specs, or just the whole computer's spec in this website, (on the right hand side):
http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/ema...-31556256.html

Any recommendation would be great...but I think what really would be helpful, would be what kind of motherboards can I upgrade to, so I can just find the right type in the stores near me, instead of shopping online. Sorry for the trouble, any help would be appreciated.
