1156 Build Suggestions

Thread Starter
I just won an Intel i5-655k, so I decided to make it into my new benching/folding rig. The problem is that I've had AMD all of my life and I know almost nothing about putting together an Intel system.

I've picked out some parts from Newegg and I would like your opinions on them. I don't need a GPU because I've got plenty I can use in it, and the Xiggy Dark Knight is just there to hold me over until I put this chip under water, or possibly DICE in the near future. I don't need a case either because this will be going on a bench.

I am very open to any and all suggestions and would greatly appreciate your help. The budget is roughly $500.

Here are some links to the mobo, and PSU.

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131482

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207007

Thanks again for any help you can provide.

Also, would I be better off going with some DDR3 2000mhz memory, and if so, could you suggest some good ones.

Edit: I'll most likely get some Super Talent 2133mhz CL8 ram, and I'll probably end up getting a Mega or a Ven-X off of the for sale section here and throw some AP-15's on it.

Looks pretty good. A few changes I'd make.

I have that same RAM kit and it is pretty good. Since you are planning on benching I'd go with a low CAS 2000MHz kit. Unfortunately it looks like Newegg is out of stock on the Mushkin 2000Mhz kits or I'd link a couple for you. Oh I'll just link Mushkin direct. For 2d benching I wish I had some Redlines http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Redline/996750.aspx or these Blacklines http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Blackline/996731.aspx which I originally intended for my build but had to cut cost. When in stock they were around $119 most of the time at Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-074-_-Product. Can probably look around and find those kits somewhere else or order direct from Mushkin.

On the Dark Knight I have one, it gets the job done on my i7 but the price isn't competitive. Performance wise the DK is right in line with the CM Hyper 212+ which is usually around $15 cheaper. For a few bucks more the Mugen 2 will perform better and you can usually find a deal on it http://www.overclock.net/online-deal...ev-b-33-a.html. Also I wouldn't overlook the Corsair A-70 if they still have the rebate on it.

Ok, thanks for all the advice. I'll definitely look into getting some Mushkin redline 2000mhz ram, and I'll probably end up getting a Mega or a Ven-X off of the for sale section here and throw some AP-15's on it.

If youre going to be benching use this ram. Uses mgh hyper chips and are proven overclockers on these forums. W/ a slight voltage bump its possible to do 7-7-7 timings

Code for $10 off might still work: byebye2010
https://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name...8x8-CL8-Memory

Edit:

Also for a cooler the prolimatech armageddon is on sale atm for $41 shipped at jab-tech. W/ some decent 140mm fans itll perform similar to high end air coolers

MIIIF is a great board. It's P55 so it won't support the integrated graphics on your 655, but it sounds like you'll be adding in some discrete GPUs so you'll be fine.

As for cooling, I highly recommend picking up a Mega off the for-sale section. AP-15's are good general purpose fans, but ehume's extensive fan testing indicated that San Aces or a pair of Yate Loons are best for cooling Megahalems. If you're looking for an equivalent fan that's available at Newegg, I recommend the Panaflo Ultra-High ($17, 114 CFM).

Great choice on the mobo. I will be getting one myself but I need the MIR to come back.

I was looking for some Hypers, but the last time I checked they were all sold out, so thanks for the link. And I'll keep the Armageddon in mind seeing how it's so cheap atm.

I already have some AP-15's lying around that I can use so I'm going to stick with them to cut costs a bit, but I will definitely be keeping my eye on the for sale section for a Mega/ Ven-X/ any other high end cooler. There's a mega in there right now that I kind of have my eye on, but I'm going to wait for the CPU to arrive before I start buyng all my new parts.

And thanks for the reassurance about the motherboard. I heard it was a good overclocker, but I'm an Intel noob, so I wasn't sure.
