Not much for 99% of users, that is unless its physx.

Anyway, most games will run greateven on stock 5850 and you'll still be UNABLE to max out crysis, metro and some others even with 580. So maybe it's better to wait for 680\\7970 or something?
I Dnt Think any Single card available can max Metro

I have had HD 5850 and its a solid DX9/DX10 but HD 6950 is a ton better @ DX11. Also for reference HD 5850 @ 1000/1250 gets ~ Same fps as stock HD 6950 @ 800/1250 (DX9/DX10). Once you unlock the HD 6970 and Overclock it for me so far (940/1450) i got ~ 30% increase from stock HD 6950. Also once voltage control comes the increase will be even bigger. GTX 570 is also very good.

OP, you shouldn't have put the NV card in the poll, that's just asking for a flame war
Instead would've been better to make 2 polls between 3 AMD and 3 NV cards, and then out of the 2 winners, take the one You wish
Uhm... probably not. Your card can't handle Crysis on Enthusiast settings without some significant lag backing it.

OP, get a 6950, they're priced very solidly and will give you an awesome boost in performance. Not to mention the huge framebuffer will solve any Bandwidth issues you might have.

Dude, Crysis maxed+ Ultra graphics mod + Nature mod + 4xAF @1024 = 40FPS average, 60 max
and a visual Overkill!

the GPU is @790 Core/4000 mem

EDIT: not to mention my brother was *nearly* maxing it (without the mods) on higher resolution with an HD2600 Pro!

EDIT: proof that 4870 can max it: (third post)

And i've noticed my 4870 performs quite a bit better than the other single 4870s Dunno why

Sorry for the [OFF-TOPIC]. I say 6950. Even if it doesn't unlock to 6970, it will OC to it And I'm off GL

I don't use it for anything other than physx, which I probably play a game that requires it at for at least a couple hours a week.

Go with the 6950. The GTX 570/6970 are not really worth an extra 110€ and the 6950 may even unlock in to a full 6970 which would be pretty awesome. I went with the 6950 because it performs pretty well, especailly in the games i play (Metro, Just Cause 2, BFBC2 etc) but also because there isn't really an nvidia alternative. It's probably the best thing for you atm and if it unlocks then that's even better

Playable with most settings on high does not constitute maxing out all settings. By your definition, a single one of my GTX 570's would eat Crysis for breakfast and ask for a second serving. Perhaps, if I was playing at your resolution, but I can assure you that is definitely NOT the case at 1080p or higher. Even my SLI 570's still have trouble maxing out vanilla Crysis at my native resolution of 1920x1200. If you really want to max out the game, you need to set ALL of your graphics options to the highest possible setting - and that includes Anti-Aliasing as well. Then watch your system join the rest of the world weeping with tears of agony.

I do agree with your recommendation though. Until reports start coming in that 6950's can no longer unlock, or prices rise significantly to be disproportionate to its performance, they will remain as the current ultimate bang-for-the-buck solution for anyone looking to play at around 1080 resolution. At 2560x1600 or triple screen resolutions, dual cards will be of even greater value as well thanks to the excellent scaling AMD has implemented.
