How relaible is furmark for stressing?

Thread Starter
I just bought a used ref 5770 and the seller said the whole system would lock up when the card hit 67-68C (STOCK SPEEDS) but would play games all day as long as it doesn't get that hot. Well I wanted to see what I got myself into. So I fired up furmark and turn my fan down. I was running at 1280x1024 full screen stability mode with 0xAA for about an hour with no problems. My temps where right below 80C the whole time. Are there other setting I could use to stress it more and see if I can duplicate his claims? Oh I'm running 10.10e hotfix drivers on Win 7 x64 with no overclocking at all.

Use OCCT run shader complexity 8, full screen, with error checking on. Run that for like 15min then if it passes your good to go.

Who was the dumbass that said that the system would lock if GPU core hits 68ºC?

If the card is stable clocks, then it won't lock until it hits the thermal threshold (believe it's somewhere around 90ºC for HD5 series).

Whats OCCT?
It sounds like the card is good to go. As has been said, OOCT works if you want to do further checking. EVGA OC Scanner works fine too (Use error checking).

I would guess that the seller had something in his system making it unstable. It doesn't sound like anything is wrong with the card.

For my slightly modified ASUS EAH5670 1GB, OCed from 775/4000 to 900/4670, its the most stressful thing, I ran about 5 back to back 60s sessions, with the fan settings at 30, 35, 40, 43C degrees, the temp maxed at about 50C, on the last 1 I got a grey screen with some lines, I had to reset the PC

In games, with the same fan/temps of 30 slow, 35 medium , 40 fast , 43C degrees fastest

The temp rarely gets to 43C,

Ok so something definately is screwy with this card. I passed 15mins of OCCT so I figured I try furmark with Maxed setting and extreme burn mode. My temps where acceptable mid 50's-60's and all of sudden I got black and red vertical lines. And now I'm getting artifacts all over in windows.
