CISCO 5505 or 520? - Page 2

scotsee, when you say "AS500" are you speaking of the 520 Router or the 5505 "security appliance" most likely I think you are speaking of the 520 router. When you say "linux based" do you mean it does not use the IOS "language" in setup? Since the 520 is what CISCO considers to be a home product is this why questions about the 520 will not be on the exam? In short, can you expand your comment about the 520 and Linux a bit more?

Did you give the link I provided a look over? can you see why I come to the conclusions about the 5505 that I have? It appears to be tailor made for what I want to do, which is have a firewall made with CISCO products (with DMZ for a website) and also use the appliance to gain some IOS practice.

I'm confused as all hell on what we're talking about.

Are you trying to find a home router or a security appliance?

520 router looks to be an all in one with the anti-x capabilities of the AS5505 and AS500. The AS500 is a small business based security appliance with a Linux operating system. If you want an all in one device that is capable of running statefull firewall, IPS, IDC and access control lists to use in your home network stick with the 800 series. preferably the 871.

scott, thanks for sticking with me here. My parameters are, current CISCO product, device must function as a router and as an ASA firewall. Don't worry about cost or overkill. I realize the CISCO club is hard to break into (meaning no mercy for the uninitated but a man has to start somewhere) but I thought I would give OCN a shot at this, you have been most helpful. Do you agree or disagrre that the 5505 has router capability? take a look at this link I found, it seems other people are wondering also.

Second link is pretty interesting in how it describes the 5505. i have been trying to do my own 'leg work" and will continue.

Would you consider the fact that the 520 has a Linux based OS something to stay away from? I have had some inital Linux training and more is planned (more correctly said "required"). Like I said i am having trouble finding a "wired' 871, all I am finding are wireless models. Again thanks for sticking with me

The security appliances are not routers. It's an advanced enterprise anti-x dedicated securtiy appliance. The 871 and 871w are the same router, the "w" just has b/g wireless capability. You can perform everything you're looking to do with the advanced security IOS on either model. You can even get away with the 851 or 851w if you don't care hybrid or linkstate routing protocols because the 851 only supports RIP.

The Cisco world dosen't need to be expensive, you just have to be smart and not over do it, which is hard at times.

About a year ago my plan for this website in a DMZ was to use an Untangle box. I have already purchased and assembled this XP based dualcore (with additional NICS). Perhaps i go with the Untangle box until Fall 2011 as then my network security classes an some more reading will be done.
