new to over clocking

Thread Starter
hello people , first of all HAPPY NEW YEAR , my name is najeeb my age is 15 and i joined the overclok.net website today , previously serching a way to oc my cpu on a dg41rq and failed , so i decided to buy a xfxnforce 630i7100 , now as far as i have read we need to increase the values of ram and stuff too if we are to increase the fsb of the cpu , it did go stable upto 990 cpu fsb at which i am at the moment on a dual core e5400 , clocked from 2.7 to 2.95 , it is my first oc , i also experinced something very strange at first overcloking to 3.2 and thhen to 3.4 my system ran stable with out heating up as i saw on speedfan software after minimizing crysis , then i turned of the pc and went out side , theni came in again took out he heat sink to compare with a thicker one ( yes removed from fan too ) then after seeing it i returned the thicker heat sink to my friend and installed it again , now at te same 3.4ghz clock under load my cpu went to 80c eek.gif , compared to previous 60C at the same clok under stress , so you think that now speedfan is showing correct temps and before it was showing wrong ? or is someting worng ? , besides that to excape from the fsb issue how can i increase the multiplier ? m bios version on this nforce 630i 1700 is (american megatrends inc v1.5B3 2/25/2009) can any one help me out ? also can you suggest me a good cpu cooler for under or for 26$ ? thnx in advanc

NOTE: after changing te mobo from inteldg41rq to xfx630 my stock temps have slightly raisen espiciall the graphics card temp , i serched it out and saw that man people complained and it was said that temps are usually higher on tis board comparetively

First of all, please use proper grammar and spelling. It makes people who want to help you's lives a hell of a lot easier.

Secondly, that CPU's multi cannot rise. Period. Also, do you know what module or name the heatsink you are using has?

Anyway, download an application called "prime95", and when you run an overclock simply run that for 12 hours. I hear OCCT is nice also, but I have only tried prime.

If the CPU fails while running prime by shutting off or if prime stops itself, then you need to take down your overclock or up your voltage.

first off, welcome to ocn and thank you for taking the time to fill you your system specs in the user cp section.

I dont have alot of experience in overclocking that particular cpu, but a general rule of thumb is to increase the fsb in small amounts(increments of 1-3) until you cant boot or lose stability. Once that happens reset bios if needed, and increase your vcore a notch or two until you get it stable. also i wouldnt recommend overclocking your ram until you get your cpu stable. this way the ram can be eliminated as the cause of any instability.

I would highly recommend doing a google search or a search on these forums for "pentium overclocking guide" or "e5400 overclocking" and find yourself a basic guide. This way you can learn all the basics of overclocking before you dive into it. Remember always research first before you start cranking up that fsb and vcore.

as for a heatsink, i highly recommend the scythe mugen 2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185142

and also the cooler master hyper 212+

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

both are great coolers at an affordable price.

gl with your overclock. and remember research first.

did you re-apply the thermal paste or whatever you use? some brands require a "burn in" period before temps will lower and stabilize.

Even Artic Silver 5 will work right upon apply and not give insane temps.

Hello again , sorry my grammer is very bad because i am not a native american or british , and thank you for the suggestion , i just took of the heat sink checked it a replaced it and got insane temps then from 3.4 ghz got it to 2.95 and get stable temps , how ever as a person mentioned above that i should use those 2 programs , i want to ask should i ? i mean sofware oc is not recomended right ? and another person mentioned the unstability yes that also happned when i pumped te fsb to 1333 from 800 so i hahd to reser the jumper settings how ever i do get stable oc till 1100 fsb , so there is no way to raise the multiplyer ? absolutely no way ? i mean it is a unlocked mobo right , i bought the mobo for the sake of oc only

Hi najeeb.
0_O!
I would run a pime95 test 12hrs with stock cooling,
i dont think its a good idea, even with a cpu @stock_clock.(imo)
You get 100%cpu load on both cores, which will produce much heat!
(plz dont fry your cpu)
And after you got some nice cooler you HAVE to run some prime95 or similar
to verify that you are stable.
Happy overclocking !

Download prime95 before playing GTA4. Running GTA4 with an unstabe overclock will cause the game to corrupt and you will lose your save files.

And buy a new heatsink. This one is nice.
