No it will give you a 8.34 (1/120) ms benefit regardless of reaction time.

People complain about things like input lag which is the same magnitude as the benefit you would see from getting a 120hz monitor.

The whole point is reaction time. You may arguably see a difference.... but without REACTING from that gain, it is pointless. I don't care what anyone says. It's for visual pleasure at MOST.

You won't be able to see anyone any faster. A well-trained human eye can see around 70 FPS at best. Technically, assuming you have exactly the same ping and connection type as the opponent, you will see him first. Well, the monitor will see him first. Your PC will see him first, however you will not. Hope that makes sense.

You should actually render all of your movies in 24 FPS. It will then be converted to 29.97 FPS via something called the "2:3 pulldown". This is because if you have a 120 Hz monitor, the monitor actually plays the same frame five times (5:5 pulldown).

When compared to, for example, a 72 Hz display, a single frame can only be played three times. Thus, the 120 Hz monitor will provide a smoother video playback. This cannot be applied to your monitor, though, however if you run with VSync on and get a constant 60 FPS, the monitor will display the same frame twice thus making it smoother than 60 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor.

Go here and scroll down to 'Frame rate differences'. Hopefully you'll gain a better understanding of how FPS and the number of Hertz are related. smile.gif

They did a study with air force pilots and they could discern the image flashed for 1/220 of a second. That is they knew what they were looking at, perception that something was different is likely shorter than that.

That is very interesting indeed, I wasn't aware of this. It was most likely due to the afterimage, though, coupled with their knowledge of aircraft. This is not the case in movie/gaming scenarios, though.

I would say that they would have flashed a random object and asked what was flashed. It was probably just a shutter and picture system with a shutter speed of 1/220.

The only reason why people thinking about 18 fps is smooth is because there is a great deal of blurring, without this blurring a fps that low looks like crap. (Also the reason why 60fps television looks "fake")

You're correct. Just researched it and it was a 1/220 shutter speed. They flashed an aircraft and asked them to identify it. This was most definitely due to the afterimage produced by your eyes and brain, though, there's no way in hell you can identify an aircraft without it. I'd be impressed if someone could - but then there's no way to get rid of the afterimage effect. wink.gif

I've never actually watched any 60 FPS television, that I am aware of anyway. Unless you mean 60 Hz, which is 29.97 FPS after a 3:2 pulldown.

jNSK, the human eye can see far more than 70 FPS. And what's all the talk about pulldown? Pulldown is only applicable on TVs, not on PC monitors. A 120 Hz PC monitor will show 120 different frames/second, it won't repeat frames. A 120 Hz TV OTOH will take the 24/29.97 FPS signal it's getting and repeat frames to get 120 FPS. This has nothing to do with PC monitors as this is a method of removing flickering (when you can see that the TV turns dark between frames) and improve smoothness while 120 FPS on a PC monitor will allow you to see more frames. 120 Hz monitors aren't meant to remove flickering, they're meant to give you a higher FPS which will reduce mouse lag w/ Vsync and give you an edge in games.

I stand corrected, I didn't know that. Fair enough, then. However, I can't tell the difference between 70 and 100 FPS.

Some people can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 FPS. If you can see a difference up to 70 FPS then you aren't completely blind wink.gif
I honestly don't know how high an FPS I can see as I don't have a 120 Hz monitor to test. I do notice the difference between 50 and 60 though, so I assume I can go higher.


Oh and the pilot/aircraft story was a test of the afterimage. Still pretty awesome that they can identify an aircraft purely based on the afterimage.
