My first system build

Thread Starter
Hi everyone! This is my first thread, but I`ve been reading the forums for months. I`ve got around to building my first desktop PC.

I have already bought some components, haven`t made a decition about others yet. I don´t live in the US, so PC components are a little bit scarce. Most of the things were bought used, I´m a highschool student, so my budget is limited.

This is a general purpose PC, but I like gaming... a lot, eventually I will buy a midrange graphics card (Gtx 460- HD6850), dont plan to crossfire/sli.

Here is what I have:

Motherboard- Asus M4A88TD-V EVO Bought used from a reviewer
Power supply- Corsair 450VX
HDD- Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb

I plan to buy:

Case- Cooler Master HAF 922, almost the same price of a HAF 912 with fans.
CPU- Used AMD Phenom II X2 550, X4 unlock guaranteed.
Memory- 1333 MHz G.Skill Ripjaws Cas 9, big price difference with 1600 MHz
CPU cooler- Scythe Ninja 3, I want something cheap and silent, I like the RPM controller. I am between this and the hyper 212+.
Thermal paste-Arctic Cooling MX-2

What do you think about the components I chose?

PS: Sorry for my broken english

How can you be sure that the CPU will unlock?

The person selling it was able to unlock it using a similar board.

The price difference with 1600Mhz is not big; in fact AFAIk most 1600 CAS9 kits cost the same as a 1333 CAS9 kit. You should be avoiding such generic settings of 1333 CAS9 with a custom built anyway.

The best price I can get for a 1600MHz Kit is 50% higher, I don´t know if performance is really noticeable.

I can see that your first build will be a kicka$$ PC. I suggest you go with the 6850. I bought the 460 768MB version because the 6850 was way too expensive for my budget.

50% higher!? That's outrageous. Where are you in Mexico and where are you shopping from?

Yeah, I know , unless you live in the northern states, the prices are ridiculous! I´ve been investigating prices for months, almost everything is 20 to 40 % more expensive, I´ll buy the missing components from a member of a mexican hardware forum called hardwaremx.com. He is the only one with a wide range of brands, most of the pc component suppliers only carry brands like ADATA or ACTECK.

That really sucks, man here in the Philippines there's actually a pretty good PC parts market (with pretty much every single PC here being custom-built) and back home in Canada I can get to a local store with a great selection.

if this is a family/general purpose pc, then a gtx 460 would be more than enough. as your case, pick something a little more friendly oriented, yah? something like a simple coolermaster 590 should suffice.
