Yes. Sales of goods act and trading standards.

I wonder how this would work being refunded by steam, who are based in the US. They've always had a strict no-refunds policy, and i don't think that's likely to change anytime soon.

I think I'll attach this in my next reply to Bethesda's so called tech support.

I don't know, I would have to disagree with the trading standards view point on this one. I am all for products being of the highest quality that they should be, however with any program there is always going to be bugs of some sort.
It can not be compared to purchasing a faulty car or home appliance. They would cost an arm and a leg to get repaired if not bought with warranty. Also the inconveinence of having to send it off to repair or replace etc.

With video games, they can be simply patched or updated for free without the need for having to send it away or get someone to come fix it. I can understand if the game is a complete shambles and a patch is not going to simply correct it. There would have to a large enough census of problems for a retailer to issue refunds for a very bad game. Especially if it is just a complete piece of crap and nothing works. However, most games have some sort of bug somewhere, so this would lead to complete mayhem for retailers and publishers. Games could be delayed over and over untill every single bug is corrected as publishers would be terrified of sales loss if this ever took off.

Whilst I agree in principle that games that don't work should be refunded, all it would do is drive the PC developing community away further. Making a game that is stable on so many different configurations is impossible and therefore, the risk of refunds would not be an attractive prospect...

If you notice the only people for this crazy refund proposal are those who QQ over trivial things.

I'd love to see every PC gamer take back CoD 8 since that'll be just as broken and just as rushed as the last two.

Activision will soon make sure their games work at launch.

To be honest, I found Bad Company 2 was more buggy for me than Black Ops.

When I first bought it I got 42fps but still felt really laggy despite many FPS drops.

Every update they brought slowly brought it down to 21fps and then eventually after a month they did an update which gives me 91fps so I'm happy now.

But it shouldn't take a month and a lot of angry customers for them to acknowledge the problem. Had it only been 5-10% of people I guarantee Activision would turn a blind eye.

Yes it was unplayable

in my experience.
