So I want to know if it is possible for me to use an external hard drive to store my itunes and iphotos on as I do not want to take up room on my imac.

Can this be done?

yes
a quick google search(haven't tested this method)... did mine a long time ago and can't remember where i found the guide... but the link below looks familiar
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
http://lifehacker.com/238296/ultrane...external-drive

i have my entire library on an external... not sure about iPhoto but i wouldn't doubt it... i had the same problem as you... adding music made copies of it on my macbook pro... kinda stupid if you ask me... why do i need copies of everything... if i needed copies i would make them myself... why not just have the library stay on the external by default

Just change the path to your media folder in the settings menu and move everything over. You may have to delete your library and re-import everything. You can still keep your playlists, etc. on the local machine.

Okay so I have done this recently but I want to know does it also transfer everything including apps, ibooks, and other forms of media?

If you just change the location of the folder and don't tell iTunes to keep your iTunes organized or to move new media there then it won't move anything. If it is set to do those things I think it will move everything but the apps. If you lose something you downloaded from iTunes you can re-download easily now.
