Will WoW benefit of an SSD?

So yeah,

I'm not sure wether to go for a Vertex 2 120Gb Extended or 60Gb, deppending if World of Warcraft takes advantage of it?

Is it worth it installing WoW on it?

You will only see improvement in loading times. I've never played WoW but if you wait around while you change between levels and that waiting is as a result of drive load times then you'll see a benefit. Otherwise not so muce.

Some games spool resources from the drive as you move around a level (GTA 4 comes to mind) but even in that case you might not see a big improvement, depending on the loading method used by the developers. If WoW also does some delayed loading as you move around and you hitch up here and there as a result then that should also be ironed out.

In general though don't expect higher FPS or anything.

It would probably benefit a bit. I'm not sure WoW would even fit on a 60gb if you are also planning to put OS and a few other things on it.

Games mostly just benefit from faster level loading times with SSDs. So if you spend a lot of time on WoW, then it is a matter of what your time is worth to you.

That being said SSDs are worth it just for the OS benefits you get alone. If you can afford the 120 then go for it, but as long as you keep the SSD under 80% full (just a random number, just to be safe) then 60GB will be fine.

Also the 120ExGB is the same SSD as the 100GB, just different FW that allocates the amount of swap space.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering, if I should spend more on the 120Gb and put WoW on it, or just buy the 60Gb SSD, and put WoW on the Caviar Black.

Hugely, believe me.

The load times (and login) will significantly improve... to the point where you don't see a loading screen.

Know those times you login to a major city and only see mounts, or dont see anyone for a few minutes? SSD that doesn't happen...

I remember when I first got the x25-v back in feb or so when I played WoW sitting in vent with my guildies switching between my characters in org going "watch this" .. By the time one disappeared my second was already sitting next to him, he was absolutely amazed.

I honestly think in terms of SSD performance WoW (After windows) is one of the best things you can put on it... Playing without it feels like pulling teeth!

ALSO Just a clarification:

WoW and Windows 7 used to fit on my 40gb, you should have no issues with a 60.

Currently I have BF2 on the SSD to improve project reality load times.

I do not play WoW but do play other MMOs and I can tell you it is well worth having a SSD for them. Though I didn't need such a big one since LOTRO, FFXIV, EVE were all less than 20gb each. tongue.gif

If I had the money and played WoW with a good amount of daily hours I would invest in one.

Well, considering that I will also install basic programs (Firefox, Ventrilo, Team Speak... etc) that might take another 1-2Gb..

People said a 60Gb Vertex 2 Extended would be very tight...

I heard overloading an SSD is not good, should I go for the 60Gb? Or pay more for the 120gb?
