Will WoW benefit of an SSD? - Page 3

The drive is 84% full with as many SSD tweaks I can find to free up some space (ie. hibernate off, system restore off, etc). WoW is taking up 22GB. It sounds like the perfect size, but it was a hassle getting Cata to install.

After downloading Cata, I tried installing it but I did not have enough room to uncompress and install. So I had to uninstall and delete the whole WoW folder and download the trial version. Why the trial version? Because it is a small version of WoW and it downloads the content you need as you explore. Later on, I found out I had all the old patch files in the WoW folder and that was taking ~8GB of space.

I did try out WoW on my normal F3 spinpoint and I really noticed the load times. After the launcher, getting to the login page was alot slower than on the SSD. It is tolerable, but I just got used to the SSD speed and really like the quickness of it. Loading screens were different also. I did not notice anything else, but I also did not have it long on the F3. I later on moved it back onto the SSD.
That's good to know! I think i'll go for the Vertex 2 120Gb Extended

In case you haven't decided yet, I went with a C300 64Gb did a fresh Win7 64-bit and installed WoW and still have 20Gb free. Load screens flash by and anything that used to require waiting is now instant. Switching characters is hilarious, you logout one and you're on the next in as long as it takes you to click the mouse.

Thanks for the information.

No, I did not buy any SSD yet.

I was planning on the Vertex 2 120Gb Extended, but not sure if I should just go for that C300 64Gb :/

I had been watching prices and caught it when it dropped to $120. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to get OS and WoW on there as my prior raid setup I was sitting at ~75Gb. The write on these Crucial's is slow as people say but to me, since I was only doing OS once and WoW once, the write wasn't a major concern. the other nice thing is if/when I go to a SATA 6 board, I already have a drive that can utilize it.

To note the 128Gb Crucial is nice also and has a faster write than the 64Gb.

I have a (50gb?) vertex 2. I am pretty sure it's 50gigs or so, it may be like 48 or something I can't recall exactly and I'm not in front of it atm.

I also play WoW.

I run WoW from my SSD (it's only ~22gb full install) and it speeds up load times a whole bunch, as well as the objects in the environment around you, they load quicker, as well as all the other players. You won't see an overall FPS boost, as once everything is loaded up, the task shifts to the CPU/GPU almost solely. I definately don't put WoW on my HDD unless I don't plan on playing it for a few weeks and want to play something else. Otherwise it would stay on my SSD for sure.

There's quite few tweaks that you can do to reduce program sizes. Wow in particular has an annoying habit of bloating overtime. Its all down to the unpacking of game data as you play. You can delete it but the game will replace it over time. Sooo...

Learn to use the mklink command and hive off the data to a regular HDD.

Its really great for log files too.

Best discussion I've seen is here:-
