There's more then enough threads/articles all over the internet which show that 512mb is not enough in this day and age.

You might get decent enough average frame rates but don't start crying when your card starts dipping into single digits when it becomes VRAM bound.

And you already have a 1Gb card and with the clock speed your 4870 is running at it isn't far off 4890 performance.

You need to start thinking more about game 'smoothness' and not '**** look at my average frame rates'

You're swaping out a decent single card for a hotter running, more power hungry dual card..... And I need to do research?
OK ill rephrase name one game I PLAY that uses more than 512Mb at 1440x900

Well Metro 2033 could possibly use more but that game just eats up VRAM and isnt that good anyway.... Oh and shroud removal shouldnt be too hard just dont force anything and if you take the card apart dont forget to plug the internal SLI connector or you'll wonder where one core went after you put it back together

Fact is 512mb will struggle for modern games

its fine for 2-3 year old games though.

We got through that already it will cause problems at higher res but not at 1440x900.....

You really don't have a clue do you?

9800GX2 uses 2 GPU cores in SLI, SCALING with any Dual GPU set-up depends on ONE single little thing... GPU LOAD...

The 9800GX2 was designed at the time of it's release for extreme resolutions and settings, which at these settings the GPU load would be extreme and the card would really shine.

But at your resolution there's not going to be enough load to give anything even close to decent scaling so the card will be effectively running at 50% nearly all the time, basically you'll be running a single 9800GTX.

4870 1Gb >>>> 9800GTX

You also have to consider that at resolutions below 1920x1080 CPU performance plays a massive roll as lower resolutions place more empthesis on the CPU. And at 2.8GHz I dout that your CPU even managed to keep your 4870 fed with enough data, And you expect it to keep a 9800GX2 happy at 2.8Ghz? lol...

You my friend, need to seriously think things through!

Hey,

Although this card may have only 512Mb, it still plays most games on High still. I've been fixing them and kept one 9800GX2 and one 260GTX and both run nearly as good as each other. Only problem is, the 9800GX2 is a very hot card because of the "sandwiched" cards so whilst the 9800GX2 is stronger, after overclocking both cards, the 260GTX pulls the gap all the more.

I'm playing on a 1920x1200 setup with usually highest settings with 2x AA and I usually get 125fps - 250fps, just depends on the settings and config adjustments, no point having textures in a game you barely see.

It still plays CoD:BO around 125FPS but AA I think is luxury until overclocked but all settings can be set to high, yes we love AA but hey, I got this computer for free so i'll work with what I got.

Personally, if your getting it cheap, keep it, use it and when you want to buy another card, use it as a phyx's card "if that's possible"

UPDATE:

Take out the shroud, put on thermal paste of the GPU's, get Thermal Tape on the VRM, buy a PCI or PCIe Fan cooler, invest in cooling, you will need it !
