First time overclocking...

Thread Starter
This is my first time overclocking and have some questions. My system specs are in my sig below. I went into the bios and left the multiplier at 22x and changed the bus speed from 133 to 146 bringing my clock from 2.93 to 3.21. I would like to see if I could get to 3.6 - 3.8 maybe 4.0. My main question is when I changed the bus speed it also increased my ram speeds, is this dangerous for my system? My motherboard only supports up to 1333 and its running at 1580. Will the mobo cap it at the max speed or should I go and change the ram settings to manual and set them to the defaults?

Also, is there anything else I need to do to reach my clock goal or should I just keep upping the bus speed until I get there then stress it w/ prime?

Here are some screens from cpu-z if it helps.

Welcome to OCN, it's not dangerous just possibly not stable. Try running some stress tests like Super PI and Prime95, If you encounter and crashes or errors just back off your RAM multiplier. There is no way around your RAM going up when you bump your FSB, you could also loosen your timings on your ram too. There are people on here who could help you out more than me when it comes to RAM though.

you should lower the ram speed to something lower than the stock settings since your overclock is going to up the ram. After you find your max stable overclock than you can bump the ram timings up if needed. odds are your overclock isnt stable right now. download occt and do some stability tests.

I ran occt for an hour and everything was fine, temps stayed under 42C and no errors or bsod's. When I restarted my pc as soon as everything shut down instead of starting back up the mobo did 3 half second beeps paused then 3 more beeps and kept looping. After trying a bunch of different combinations of cpu/ram clocks/ram multipliers no matter what I tried I would get a bsod while logging in or right after. I changed my ram timing from 9 9 9 24 to 8 8 8 24 and now I don't get a bsod anymore. Lowering the ram timing won't have a much of an effect other than possible instability correct?

Currently I'm at 3.4 for the cpu and 1240 for the ram. I'm gonna drop the ram multiplier and up the cpu to 3.6 or 3.8 whichever gets me closest to the 1333 ram clock and then rerun occt and prime.

lowering the timings actually makes the ram better so be happy about that. But yea lower your ram multi overclock then up it and find your 24/7 stable settings.

This makes me love unlocked multis all that much more.

Did some research on my board and turns out you can't change the vcore on it. It only allows you to change the bus and ram multi/timings. So my max overclock is probably around 3.0 - 3.2. Is there a way to unlock the vcore in bios? If not I guess I'll have to wait until I get a new mobo.

I had the same problem about the vcore voltage being locked.
But I looked all over my bios and I found a setting called vcore offset. This ups the vcore voltage. So if you can find this on your bios u may should be able to overclock higher

intel boards are usually not good overclocking boards. I suggest getting a new board and gfx card in your next update because the res of your gear is good.

My board doesn't have an offset option, I'll just wait until I get a new mobo. Thanks to everyone for helping me out.
