Why not? I don't want you to find me. I don't want you to know who I am. I want to be able to say you are an incompetant moderator (Dont take this seriously or personally, its just an example) to make you nerdrage and NOT BE ABLE TO to hunt me down and kill me. There are enough psycho crazies out there, I don't need YOU or ANYONE ELSE knocking on my door asking me for my internet credentials.

IP address is enough of a unique identifier to be sufficient. Can you spoof? Yes. Can you proxy? Yes. But IRL you can disguise yourself, put on a costume, fake mustache, dye your hair. I think this should **ONLY** be used in things like slander, stalking, or other malicious activies and not to police facebook or myspace (given that it isn't one of the aforementioned activities).

I was mainly speaking in the context of this bill, which is your opinion in the second paragraph you wrote:

Quote:
There has to be intent to harm, intimidate, threaten, or defraud another person – not necessarily the person you are impersonating. Free speech issues, including satire and parody, aren’t addressed in the text of the bill.
And yes, I think you should be responsible for that. Just because it is online does not remove any responsibility for actions. Talking me down as a mod, while it makes me cry inside, does not really affect me personally. But things like the recent DDoS attacks and the content of this bill is very important to keep moderated. So yeah, things like parodies and satire and dissing my mod ability aren't really what I'm talking about. There are people who want to be anonymous no matter what online because they somehow think they 'deserve' it.

+1 - this "law" will go unenforced just like the do not call list law and the no driving while talking on the cell phone law.

Not sure what they will do about aliases - or even avatars, since few people actually post their own?

Maybe California should try to enforce some of the actual laws, like putting murderers away, or prosecuting corrupt public officials, etc, like the stuff that is already on the books that they don't enforce.

It's not like this is going to be some strictly enforced china-esque policy. What this will stop is, for example, a laid off worker who is pissed off at his boss claiming to be said boss and posting harmful and embarrassing things online. You can't do that in real life either without consequences.
I know this is an odd concept for a lot of people to grasp, but the internet is apart of real life. It's not as if your life suddenly stops when you hop online.

Good thing I don't live in California.

BTW, this is Steve Jobs.
