X-Fi Creative Questions.

Hey guys,

Just installed a update for my X-Fi card and am now just tweaking with it, but there are some things on there that i dont understand or what they do even.

In the X-Fi CMSS-3D Headphone menu:
What does 'MacroFX do?
What does 'ElevationFilter' do?

I have 'Optimize speaker output for headphones' as i have 5.1 (or seem to be) Razor headphones, so hopefully when gaming i can use these to there potential.

Ive tried the 'Barbershop Experience' here and it sounds absolutely awesome with the chopping the hair etc lol But it all becomes different when i play games

Could anyone brief me on what these option do exactly and maybe go through with me what setup would be best for me?

Just a quick note, i do like switching modes, 'GAME MODE' (5.1 Headphones)for obviously gaming and then 'ENTERTAINMENT MODE' (2.1 Music system) for Music.

Thanks for listening, and check out that Barbershop, it really is quiet good

Thanks

The barbershop demo is a specially recorded demonstration. It is "binaural" and emulates real sounds positioning and depth in the head by specially placing microphones to record. Games and most music doesn't use this technology and therefore sounds quite a bit different.

Download track #1 off this album for another example of binaural:

Now, do you realize that if you're headphones are USB than your sound card is doing nothing right?

You actually want to use audio creation if you want "real" music quality. Entertainment throws in all kinds of fancy filters that color the sound but its killing the quality in the process and distorting audio.

At any rate, cmss3d is for simulating surround on a 2 channel setup, if i remember correctly. Your razer 5.1 headphones are doing the same thing already (that little brick on the cord is essentially a soundcard that is taking your audio and applying its own version of cmss 3d to it). As such, you should be disabling it. I could be wrong about this one as i havnt actually owned a 5.1 headset myself and im not familiar with the razer ones, but this is true for some older ones I've had experience with.

EDIT: obviously not.

On topic, the Creative effects can make audio more fun, warm, bassy... whatever you want, but obviously move further and further away from the original quality. This is why "audiophiles" change source equipment oe headphones/speakers (as opposed to the file itself) because it can change the way audio sounds, but without actually changing the data (and potentially decreasing quality).

Thanks ill look into that, i didnt know that cord would have its own mini-soundcard, just thought it was Volume control for the individual speakers

So the 'Audio Creation Mode', its something that looks complicated to be honest. Is it something i can use to play games with too?

Audio creation would allow bit-perfect playback. This is completely un-adulterated audio. As perfect quality as possible with no extra effects.
