CPU stain on the pin side

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I recently purchased a used CPU and to my surprise, after the transaction and close inspection, I saw this stain that look like thermal paste. What should I do? Clean it or this cpu is completely useless. I don't want to jump and the latter conclusion.

Hi.

I would try to wipe it off with some rubbing alcohol, or a xylene-based cleaner, then give it whirl to see if the CPU works.

I'll clean it as mentioned. If I were to use the cpu as it is, would it damage my motherboard?

Thanks,
Manji

Shouldn't do, Its more likely to damage the chip, But even that is VERY unlikely

That depends if the residue is conductive say a silver based thermal paste then it could cause a short.

Either way I would clean it otherwise the residue might transfer to the pins which would a much bigger pita to clean off without causing damage.

Clean the chip. You would not want thermal paste in the socket of the motherboard. That would be a PITA.
