WD20EARS performance issue [FIXED]

Thread Starter
I'm experiencing a strange problem here. Lately I've noticed my Caviar Green has been running slow but I didn't know just how slow until today.

This was in October:

sshot20110102174820.png

100MB/s average

This is now:

sshot20110102174846.png

55MB/s average

Read/Write performance has been almost halved.
Ideas? I have none. Granted, the disk is fuller now, but this isn't an SSD.

Fixed

The more stuff you put on the drive the slower putting new stuff on the drive gets.

ATTO writes a test file with their being nothing on the drive or with how much you had on the drive at the time you tested back in October it would be at the fastest part of the drive. Run HD tune and you will see it starts high ends low as it tests the whole drive.

Access time has also gone up (HD Tune), from 17ms in May, to 19ms in November and 22ms right now.

My WD6400AAKS also has less free space but benchmark values (R/W and access time) remain the same.

Believe what you want. whistle.gif

Or you could just format the drive and see if your speed returns.

I had my suspicions, but I never thought it could have such a (negative) impact.

sshot20110102231042.png

Notice how it's faster now? (90/95MB/s vs 50/55MB/s). The access time even went down to 20.8ms (-1ms)

How? I defragged it with Windows' Disk Defragmenter. And no, fragmentation wasn't the problem, it was defragmented regularly, and therein lies the problem: UltimateDefrag and its Consolidate mode of defragmentation.
