Sudden restart and now Aero/Windows Color is busted

Thread Starter
My computer suddenly restarted while I was surfing and chatting on Firefox, and when it came back up it was stuck on Windows Classic.

I can switch it in Personalization to Aero themes or Windows 7 Basic but all that does is change the background and sound; the color SAYS it's changed to Slate/Sea/Twilight/whatever else I try changing it to but the taskbar and windows remain Classic, and when I click on the Windows Color and Appearance option in that window to customize it it shows up as it does in my desktop, in Windows Classic. High-Contrast themes, on the other hand, work fine.

EDIT: I have noticed that switching to Aero themes makes the taskbar white instead of light gray, and enlarges windows title bars a little bit. It does not actually change shape to the light-blue rounded off Windows 7 Basic, though.

List of things I have tried:

- Restarted computer again (several times, after each fix too, no effect)
- Uninstalled, reinstalled video drivers
- Set my GPU back to stock settings
- Restarted Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
- Did a system restore back to the last update earlier that day
- Did the Aero troubleshooter tool (came up with no problems)
- Booted up without most startup programs or services
- Ran full virus and spyware scans overnight, both came up clean

None of these fixes have worked, and I can't find anyone else with my exact problem. I installed nothing the entire day, and the only things that updated were Security Essentials (definition update), Minecraft, and a game on Steam.

My computer is otherwise fully functional and my OC is not unstable. I'm basically completely stumped at this point.

Thanks in advance.

After you click the Windows button in the bottom left hand corner, type in Aero. Then click on Find and Fix Problems with Transparency and Other Visual Effects.

Unfortunately I already did that. That's what I was referring to as the Aero troubleshooter tool. :/

And that. Here's an example of what I described in the first post:

For reference, clicking Windows Color brings up that Windows Color and Appearance window as it appears in that screenshot no matter what theme it is set to.

Yeah, but notice how I have the "Characters" theme selected. Therein lies the weirdness of this problem.

Are you sure your overclock is stable? Otherwise i still think you should reformat. I bet it has something to do with your Windows. Sometimes Windows have a small error and needs to be fixed. You can do a scan check in command prompt to make sure windows is running right.

I tried running the WEI benchmark, unfortunately it didn't fix it.

It passed 12 hours of stress testing and has been running fine for normal use for weeks now, but I will admit it's a possibility. I'll write down my current stuff and clock it back down to normal and see if that helps. If not I may have to reformat anyway; it's not a big deal, my important stuff is backed up, just a pain to reinstall all those games.

By scan check, do you mean chkdsk or some other kind of scan?
