Been out of the PC scene for a while...

Thread Starter
Hey guys, it's been a while since ive been on these forums. I no longer know what the current tech is or what is "the best" hardware to get for the price. I'm looking to make some large upgrades to my computer. I have a few questions I would love to be answered.

1. What is a better socket to get for the price/future use? 1156 or 1366.

2. I only plan on ever having 1 graphics card, will my power supply still be able to handle new upgrades?

3. Are the new series of graphics cards for ATI and Nvidia much longer than the previous series? I would like to keep my current case, but want to make sure the card fits in it.

4. I would really like to get a good solid state hard drive to put my OS and games on, but I have NO idea what is the best brand to get. Can anyone recommend something?

Thanks!
McLovin

I would say 1366 or wait for Sandy Bridge which comes out in like 7 days or so. I have 1156 and I regret getting this instead of 1366. Your power supply seems to be more than enough to handle one card. My card barely fits in my case (in sig). Crucial C300 solid state is a great way to go, I get mine tomorrow.

if u only use one gpu and dont want 6 core cpu support then lga 1156 socket paired with a i7 870 will perform at par with an i7 950 on lga1366....both of these are not future proof though....as lga1156 is going to be replaced by 1ga1155 this month and lga1366 is going to be replaced by lga2011 later this year......and for the graphic cards the size of current gen is not larger then the older cards....cant say about ati cards though....and ur current power supply would be ample for any single gpu out there.....
and about ssd's sorry not much idea.....smile.gif and happy new year....

Neither. 1155 is literally a week away.

Current cards top out around 11 inches, just like the previous generation.

Pay more attention to the controller used than the brand on the drive.

Vertex 2 is a great ssd.
I would either go with 1366 if you want cheap and good performance or go to sandy bridge for the latest and greatest.

Also, Most cards are developed with wider pcb's now, instead of longer, your good.

yes, go sandy bridge instead of lga 1156 socket chips. i hear sandforce controllers are great for ssd and win 7 uses trim so you should be gtg.

wait for Sandybridge and get the C300 SSD, its sick. Fastest read speeds on a single drive and SATA6G capable, it will be great match for any Sandybridge with P67 chipset. .
