I have achieved 3.85ghz on the CPU and 2760mhz on the CPU-NB (233mhz FSB), though the temps were too high for my liking (coudlve easily made 3.9 or 4.0 with better cooling). Please read my guide, all my examples in there are based on the 955 c2 and 790fx-gd70.

First off, the 955 chips that reach 4.0 or higher are usually the c3 revision, which is more efficiently built, has less energy loss, and is generally cooler and far more stable at high clock speeds. Secondly, not every chip is the same (explained in my guide), my 955 BE c2 reached 3.85 on air, but your may hit its wall at 3.7ghz or 4.1ghz...all depends on whether you got lucky with your chip.

In my experience anything over 2400mhz on the 790fx northbridge chip is unstable without a decent voltage increase. I have mine currently runnign at 2760mhz and 1.38v (up from 1.1v)

Booting does not equal stability. You should run Prime95 (for at least 6 hours) and/or run a Maximum level IntelBurnTest. Then you will know if its stable.

HT link does not affect real worlds performance and anything over 2000mhz will cause instability on your board....trust me, I've experimented with it.

Please, read my guide stonedzen's AMD Overclocking Guide for Newbs!. The one ckybam3 posted is more thorough, but mine is more approachable for new overclockers (imho).

Hope this helps and I will check this thread in a bit to see your response.

PS: what is your CPU cooling?

im running 3.6 @ 1.30v no problems (undervolted) bios - 1.F (1.15)
had it at 3.8 @ less than 1.4, i dont remember what my setting was.
turned it down due to temp problems,
going from AS5 to IC7 helped that...
i'm pretty confident 4.0ghz+ should be easily attainable.
790fx-GD70 is a really good mobo...

i'm able to boot at 4.0GHZ now, 20X200 1.5V. haven't tested for stability yet or tried with lower Voltage.
NB set to 2600 with 1.35V

memory 1333(stock) voltage stock and i set timing to 7-7-7-21

I'll test for stability tonight ... temps so far is 38C idle

You guys think i could get tighter timings with my memory? i tried 7-7-7-20 but wouldn't boot... any suggested timings i could try?

Thx for the guide.

I found out that my max stable OC is 3900@ 1.47V ..NB 2600 1.3V
mem: 1333mhz

but nobody answered me about HT? and its not mentioned in your guide if rising HT increases or lowers performence.

Keep HT @ 2000. Max stable overclock I got with the C2 955 was 3902mhz. I could boot all day at 4/4.1ghz but it could never pass a stress test. The NB will be fine at 1.3V 2600mhz. I couldn't go any further with that CPU. Any higher needs serious volts & that's not worth the temps for an extra 50/100mhz
post #20 of 27
used to run same setup, minus the tri channel RAM, lol ??

955 with a c2 rev. IMC rarely get 4ghz stable,I could only get 3.9, but I had bunk RAM.

BTW, only use two dimms
