A simple Question: GTX 460 or AMD 6870? - Page 4

6870's have mega scaling, important if you are crossfiring.

No physx was left on but that doesnt matter as I'm talking about the GPU score only. I should note that the score skyrocketed with the processor at 4GHz, think they only got 26k odd at 3.2

So I was a bit of an ati fan, and one thing I learned was that the 6870 when overclocked, could not match the 5850 clock for clock. This means that the 5850 is a better card in my opinion, although lacking somewhat in tessalation performance (apparently). Now if my 460 will just beat a 470 at 810mhz, but will go to 900, and even more, in my opinion this makes the 460 the best card between it and the 6870, given it's cheaper. I think the gtx 460 are simply astonishing provides you Overclock them, and for that reason you want the hawk or any other similarly overclocked (hence better binned) card.
6870 in performance wise is in between 5850 and 5870, and that's where ati/amd aimed it for. 6870 =/= 5870

no you'll see a huge drop without physx off.

I got 29k with physx on, when I turn physx off it dropped to 24k.

so turn physx off and your score will drop significantly but your processor.

edit: I missed the word, gpu only.

Now, 2 460s versus 2 6870s is a whole other ball game. If you want two cards (for now or future) go with the 460. SLi scaling for the 400 series is 90-110% which is higher than what crossfire can currently do.

*edit*
But as long as you are an overclocker (plus the clocks on that 460 are high) the 460 isnt a bad purchase and will run compareably to the 6870.
Yes the 6870 will outperform the GTX460, though your scaling argument isn't entirely true. 6870s have AMAZING scaling in Crossfire. And 90-110%? How can you get above 100% scaling using SLI? Is one of the cards holding back until it gets a buddy?

Since the post is GTX 460 vs AMD 6870 I'll stay on subject and not talk about other cards in comparison.

Make no mistake about it the AMD 6870 1GB is better than a Nvidia 460 GTX 1GB card. Below are two tests run by Legit Reviews on COD Black Ops.

http://www.legitreviews.com/images/reviews/1465/cod.jpg

On the 3D chart the AMD 6870 is the top graph and the GTX 460 is the bottom graph.

http://www.legitreviews.com/images/r...465/cod-3d.jpg

AMD 6870 won the first and 'hammered' GTX 460 in 3D benchmarks. So if your ordering and wondering which GPU is the one you want. Keep this in mind if your priced in this mid-ranged gaming graphics card.

I got my MSI Twin Frozr II running at 940Mhz core clock and 1175Mhz memory for 4.7Gbps very stable. Running Crysis gamer settings AAff at max resolution. That's 30.1 Gpixel/s at 150.4 bandwidth. Wink

Lastly AMD scales up better than Nvidia when running two cards. Crossfire gets better gains then SLI does on it's second card. Known fact. Another good reason to choose the new AMD cards.

Two AMD 6870 is a tad better than one Nvidia GTX 580 at less power consumption and less money.

Now in the end they will tell you that the GTX 460 is cheaper by $50 and is the better "value" for your money. Performance wise the AMD 6870 wins and that's what the poster is asking. You be the judge if the small difference is worth it to you or not but performance wise AMD is winner winner chicken dinner.

Happy Gaming!

lol ati/amd fan boy.

ignoring 3D vision benchmark, plus not that many people use 3d vision, I doubt op is going to use 3d vision. So I would ignore 3d vision bench marks other wise regular bench mark difference is 3frames lol, it's not significant, at least to me 3 frames isn't a big deal at all.

pair up 2 gtx 580 with cf 6870

plus OP is looking for single card solution...

look at these bench marks, unless he's gaming at 2560x1600 6870 is still not No.1

If you live near a Fry's Electronics, they have the Galaxy GTX 460 768 for $89 after rebate. That's what I ended up buying. I don't think there is a better value out there right now. I could be mistaken though.

EDIT: Oh, you live in Australia... sorry nvm. :\\
