A couple percent based on this review.

The main benefit is you can generally unlock the extra shaders and bump the clocks to 6970 levels, therefore having a 6970 while spending ~$70 less. Then, the performance pans out a bit more..

At 1080p ish you'd gain 10-12% or so over the 5870 with your 6950 unlocked and OC'd to 6970 levels, assuming all else was equal (ie, bottlenecks, etc).
