hey everyone, i was wondering if i could use methyl hydrate to join acrylic. i was looking for methylene chloride but the closest the paint shop had was methyl hydrate, so i was just wondering if it would join acrylic.

Any help would be really appreciated because i only have one or two days to do this

I'll admit I am not sure. Sounds kind of nasty though (course most organic solvents are). If this is not structural, acetone will bond ok. Some of the automotive finish reducers will do a great job too, not sure what the active ingredient is though.

Good luck.

Methyl Hydrate is another name for methanol. I haven't tried using methanol but it's a strong solvent so I probably wouldn't use it.

Why not try a compound like JB-Weld or IPS Weld-on #4 are suitable adhesives available from your plastics supplier.

Plumber's goop or JBWeld would work fine.

A search turned up this:
Quote:
Acetone is basically acryllic solvent. Since HomeDepot does sell Acetone, all you need to do is
1) find a well ventillated place so you don't die
2) get a jar with a lid (probably from the garbage)
4) shave up some scap acryllic (or pulverize it)
5) mix the acryllic and the Acetone until you get a nice consistency
6) carefully and neatly mask off ALL areas that you don't want to ruin
7) carefully and neatly use your mix as mortar/glue
When the Acetone evaporates you'll have a solid Acetone "structure".

I forgot an important step, most chemical reactions give off heat and/or change volume. I would keep the jar capped only outside and open it frequently to release pressure.

The best is to use an acrylic/polycarbonate solvent cement (such as weld-on #5); mixing ground acrylic with MEK/acetone/etc will not provide good results.

I my self have just discovered the joy plastic, Acrylic specifically.
Its called "solvent welding."
I use IPS weld on #3 for most of the welds, but your joints have to be perfect.
If you need something to work like a filler try IPS weld on #16
this video will explain a lot.

One tip about IPS 16, if you apply multiple layers it will get bubbles

I just made a sweet double bay Reservoir like this and plan on doing a lot more stuff.
