Nikon D3000 for ~$250, worth it?

Hello. One of my step-dad's friends pawned a Nikon D3000 and an extra lens for $200. He isn't going to get it out of pawn. He gave us the ticket so we could get it if we wanted. To get it out is about $250. Is it worth it to get it out? He owned it for about 3 months before pawning it. We don't know about the amount of usage. We plan to go to the pawn shop tomorrow morning. What are your opinions on us making this purchase?

Heck yes. Nab it.
They sell for around ~400$
You could use it as a beginner DSLR or take it and resell it.

If it's in good condition, I think it's worth it. It's definitely in your best interests to make sure it's in good condition though.

Check to make sure there's no dust on the sensor, damage to the viewfinder, mirror, or body, and check the number of shutter actuations on the camera. Google should tell you how to do all of these things smile.gif

Definitely do a thorough check on it. I would even take an SD card with me and snap a few pics with it. Take a shot at the narrowest aperture against a light colored surface to check for dust motes on the sensor. The EXIF data of the shots you took will tell you the number of actuations on the shutter. Also take the lens off and check to see if the mirror is clean and unscratched.

Ok, guys, I brought it home. It seems to be a bit used. We think that he bought it used. There is some scuffing around the area where the tripod would mount. The extra lens looks like a telescoping lens. It came with a case, charger, cleaning cloth, a polarizing filter, an ultraviolet filter, a cable, a pen-like tool that looks like it's for cleaning, a strap, a 2GB SD, and a bag. I'm waiting for the battery to charge now. Sorry if it is hard to understand what I mean. My last camera was a Kodak Easyshare C533.

Scuffing around tripod mount: That's normal. Of course, it's your call whether or not you're okay with it.

Telephoto lens: Can you give us the exact model of the lens?

Case, polarizing filter, UV filter: Same as above, model please! The UV filter might be garbage. The lower quality ones actually hurt image quality and aren't worth putting on your lenses.

Pen: Something like this? If so, it's called a lens pen and it's used for cleaning, well, lenses.

And when the battery is charged, post some pictures please smile.gif As GoneTomorrow said, put it on Aperture Priority (A on the dial), scroll the wheel all the way to the right to set the narrowest aperture, and take some pictures. Post them on here and we'll tell you if there's dust or not if you need help.

Not sure about the circular polarizer (CPL), but the UV filter I wouldn't use on the lens. The case is fine. As for the lens, I'm not particularly fond of it. Rather, I'm not too fond of any lens with that large a focal range to it.

Is the 18-55mm also included in the package, or is the 28-200mm the only lens you're getting?

Yep, if you have that lens, I'd sell the Sigma 28-200mm and use the money to fund either a 55-200mm VR (if you need zoom) or a 35mm f/1.8 (if you shoot low light/DoF), or just pocket the cash.

I'd much prefer the image quality of the 18-55mm VR.

Oh, and also, if the test shots show no dust on the sensor and if you can't find any damage on the mirror or the viewfinder, then it's definitely worth $250.
