Will Intel come back to the 1366 socket?

Thread Starter
The title basically says it all. I realize sandy bridge is coming out and they are using a new 1155 socket.

I realize that my question probably doesnt have a factual answer yet, I just wanted ya'lls opinion. Do you think they will come back to the 1366 socket? Isn't it far better than the 1155 socket anyways and provides more "future-proof" headroom?

Just curious. I just got an EVGA 4-way Classified and I would like to think it isnt garbage yet lol.

I sure hope so. I know the 1366 socket has some advantages over the 1155 socket like more pci-e lanes (something like that).

Isn't 1155 supposed to be replacing the 1156 socket?

Thats what I thought too. I know the only reason they came out with the 1156 socket was due to the high cost of x58 boards. I remember when sandy bridge was first being rumored, they had listed SandyBridge CPUs for the 1366 socket too (and obviously that isnt right).

I just hope they dont skip over a perfectly good socket and make a 1365 or something lol.

Yes. 1155 is replacing 1156.

And I believe (correct me if i'm wrong..) the 2011 socket will replace 1366.

Oh I have no idea, so i couldnt correct you. I wouldn't be surprised if thats what they are doing. I just want at least ONE more processor series for the 1366, you know? It hasn't fully been unleashed yet. Its not like we are maxing it yet, right?

LGA 1356 is replacing 1366. Link

2011 will be aimed towards servers and dual socket environments.

I believe not. The 1366 has had it's latest iteration of processors with the 6 cores.

I presume they are going to introduce 32nm 8 cores for the first processor generation based on the 2011 socket. Perhaps a 12 core could be the top end that platform reaches.

Who knows?

This, essentially.

If any new CPUs are released for 1366, they will be clock speed, power envelope tweaks of existing 1366 designs. Don't expect anything radically new.

A cheaper 6 core might be in the distant future, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

haha. Nah. I will be happy with a whole other year. As long as sandybridge doesnt beat out the 6cores, I will be content.
