As I stated earlier no one can firmly say "x voltage is safe for x years" until people start to test these chips long term. SB doesn't seem to need water if the walls are around 5ghz anyways.

He must be smoking a strain of pot which gives you common sense because no one in their right mind would think that 1.5v on a 32nm chip is safe long term.

Oh and we finally have confirmation that you can only raise the turbo multi and not the actual multi of the chip, so if you like running at 4Ghz all day long you are out of luck as turbo only comes in when under load!

Why intel, why? frown.gif

What's the difference really? The speed is there when you need it. If I'm checking my email, do I need to be at 5GHz?

And what about when you're gaming or doing something else CPU intensive? Are you going to be comfortable running your 32nm SB at 1.45v or 1.5v?

Okay, seriously, enough. You guys are already shunting Bulldozer just because you saw this, which is not fair. There are barely even any details out on Bulldozer!

Well, actually, there are details, you really just don't know about them. AMD has stated that Bulldozer will be capable of a 500Mhz Turbo Boost on all cores - consider that the highest end Bulldozer has 8 cores; what about for boosting 4 or 2 cores? There's obviously going to be much more boost, most likely a 1Ghz+ boost on 2-4 cores! Rumours have also shown that Bulldozer will be rated at 3.5Ghz stock, so that's right - we could even be seeing 4.5Ghz or more as one of the rated turbo boost bins on the CPU! We might actually be able to expect so much more from Bulldozer than we thought (clock speed wise at least).

If you've looked at the details with Sandy Bridge, the multiplier you can increase is the turbo boost multiplier only and not the primary CPU multiplier. Simply pointing out a fact in this thread, SB hits a wall at around 4.8Ghz, requiring massive voltage amounts after that (similar to the 3.8Ghz wall on the C2 Phenom II). I seem a bit on the fanboyish side here but really, I'm just pointing out some facts and comparing them. 5Ghz on air is definitely awesome, but this is actually quite shocking to see for me.

I'm not entirely sure what the absolute max ratings for voltage will be on SB, but I would not be comfortable exceeding them, without sub-ambient cooling, for extended use.

No way in hell would I put 1.45v though my gulftown (which has an absolute max rating of 1.4) 24/7 if it was going to be running at more than about 30C, full load.

Awwww only 4.8GHz reliably on air? Because you know... that's not already amazing enough on air.

I'm happy at 4.5GHz, even 4.0GHz. There's seriously no use out of an extra 300MHz when you're up that high, unless you're folding/doing other things uncommonly done.

That said, I'm still waiting on Bulldozer to see how AMD stacks up against Intel in price to performance. I've switched between AMD and Intel as well as NVIDIA and ATI for each of my builds so I'm not some fanboy of either side; I'm open minded and look into what suits me best. thumb.gif

Well, for starters, the fact that it'll only be that speed when it's under heavy load. When you're doing anything else, it'll stay at stock speeds.
