I've been told by some that 6950's are binned as such because they might be of inferior quality, and that unlocking them might result in artifacting and other shenanigans. On the other hand, the I saw a list of over one hundred 6950's unlocked, including all the various manufacturers, and only about 5 of them were experiencing problems. That would seem to prove that AMD is simply soft-modding their cards to sell them for less -- stupid, considering anyone who's going to buy a 6950 probably knows how to flash a vga bios. Silly rabbit...

Anyway, on to my actual question. Are you able to overclock your unlocked 6950s to the same levels as overclocked 6970s, or are they also limited by voltage, etc? Any benchmarks from the before and after?

Does anyone know of any other cards that can be unlocked? 6950 is a 6950 for a reason probably won't OC like a 6970 and be less stable. Probly failed the 6970 test that's why it's a 6950.

I've hit ~930/1525 ish but only ran Furmark.
Any benchmark you had in mind?

You could unlock pipelines on the original 9800 to turn it into a 9800 Pro wink.gif
Also, I believe some of the '10 ram chip' 465's could be unlocked to 470's..

Perhaps AMD had a better manufacturing process than they were expecting - so they've ended up with not enough poor chips to soft-mod into lower models.

After all - if they offer a 6950 on the market, they're obliged to have enough of them to go round, or they get bad press for supply issues.

Someone's probably been kicked quite severely for under-estimating the number of highest-quality chips they could produce tongue.gif

That's fine by me though!

So I assume unlocking the card voids the warranty if it happens to just not work anymore right? And how easy it is to revert it back to 6950 if it is even possible?

I would imagine it's just a matter of backing up the original bios before flashing it with the 6970 bios, and then reflashing with the backup if the unlock doesn't work well.

Example: I currently run a 9800 GTX+ in SLI with a GTS 250. I tried extracting the bios from the GTS 250 and flashing the 9800 GTX+ with it, just so they identify as the same card (so I can install new nvidia drivers without having to take out one of the cards), but after flashing the 9800 with the 250's bios, it would only detect 512mb of the 1GB of RAM, and could not be used as the primary display card. I reflashed the 9800 back to the original bios, and everything was fine.

Just like aftermarket cooling, if you replace the original before you send the card in for service, you should be fine. That's assuming you don't somehow brick your card, of course...

This was the review I was thinking of when I mentioned that most of the cards worked well after unlock. The thing this article doesn't make clear is whether the 6950 overclocks as well as the 6970, as you have to manually up the voltage to bypass AMD Powertune.

Very unlucky indeed. If you just bought the card, you should try and return it to the retailer by claiming it is artifacting, and get another board.

On the bright side, Deadmau5 is awesome. wink.gif
