Getting a third Nvidia card

Thread Starter
:sigh:

So here is the thing. I already have two GTS 250 512MB cards. And I have some spare cash, considering i don't blow it on steam lol, and i was thinking on getting a 3 way SLI configuration. Initially thinking on the aesthetics of having three cards showing on my side window

Or should i sell them and Upgrade to something 'somewhat affordable'?

Tell me OCN, what do you guys think?

also how much more will i get out of a three way SLI?

I like the aesthetics of SLI, especially Tri-SLI, but of late I've had some card issues so I decided to upgrade to a single 570, should be arriving this week. Probably not what you're looking at, and at the prices that 250's go for around here a third one is a cheap addition. Otherwise selling them might get you close to a new GTX460 which would be a solid single card, though I'm not sure how much of a performance increase.

I am pretty sure that you can't 3 way sli gts 250's.

Honestly, I would sell your two cards and get a newer generation card.

You should sell those cards while they're still worth something, and get a single good card.

I'd get what I could from the existing 250's and put the money you were going to waste for a third and get at least a GTX 460
post #7 of 13
i dont' think it will do tri sli, but its a remake of the 9800GTX which did, so idk.

tri sli scales poorly in anything but benchmarks, id geta GTX 570 or GTX 480 if i was you.

GTX470-GTX480 etc or even a 460 will be a better choice
post #9 of 13
GTS250s can definitely do Tri-SLI but the margin of increase in performance isnt as large as the new architectures from the fermi chips.. Tri-SLI is a smexy thing to look at.. but lets face it.. GTS250 is already OLD TECH.. it would be better for you if you could sell those GTS250 and get a GTX460 and then just get another GTX460 for SLI when you got the cash.. its currently the bang4buck for midrange graphics cards.. HELL!! if i have the cash and a buyer for my old GTS250.. then i would do it and get a GTX460.. or if something comes along the GTX500 series with the GTX460 price/performance..

or sell them and add alittle more and get a single card like the GTX570 or GTX580 which will provide better stability and compatibility with most games compared to multi-GPU setups..

My opinion:
1. 3-way SLI scaling for GTS250 will not be too bad. Just do not expect it to be as good as the 2-way. I imagine you will have a noticeable difference.

GTS250 is basically an improved 9800GTX(+). Here are a few links about its scaling:
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/694/1/

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2492/5

http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/13...d/index10.html

http://benchmarkextreme.com/Articles...lysis/P25.html
(this one is for GTX285 but it could act as an additional reference)

Study the graphs and see if the performance increase with a 3rd card satisfy you.

2.I will only go 3-way SLI GTS250 if both conditions below are met:
a. you can get the 3rd one cheap

b. you are comfortable with a corresponding increase in temp. I suppose the 2 existing cards are sitting in the 2 blue slots and so they have a wide 2-slot gap in between for very decent ventilation. When the 3rd card goes into the middle black slot, the 3 cards will sit back to back and even though GTS250 is not a hot card to start with, such a 'congested' configuration will lead to higher card temps. Be prepared to deal with this.
