I stand corrected. I think it is possible for you to use the 3rd 9800GT for Physx. I apologize for causing your confusion.

Cards 1 & 2: SLI graphics rendering +
Card 3: Dedicated to PhysX acceleration
Graphics card 3 is not required to have the same GPU as graphics card 1 & 2
it will work....

i have seen people use 4x480s.... with the last one as a physx.... because it is more benifical in some game over 4way SLI... E.g.... Mafia 2

2) Can I have an ATI HD4870 as the main graphics card, and have a secondary Nvidia card to process PhysX, and PhysX only? (obviously if question one is not ruled out, and a bridge is not necessary.) Would this even work when it comes down to games that have PhysX enabled?

Thanks.

1, you don't need a SLI bridge for a Physx Card, but put on in anyway, the Tri SLI Bridges look badass!

2, yes you can, but the drivers are discontinued so your probably better off with Tri SLI 9800GT

do bridge the third 9800GT so u can still use tri-sli in normal games. And for physx games, disable tri-sli in the driver, keep 2 way sli, then select the third card as physx as a PhysX processor.

Sorry, can't bridge on the 9800GT as two of them are 2-way only. Thanks, I got what I was looking for. Let's home GTAIV will play a little better
