Which cpu/ram/mobo/power supply for ~50W build? - Page 3

Getting to 20~30W on the Atom is a no-brainer. My main gripe with it for use as a file server is the lack of SATA ports. The chipset itself is limited to just two. Then again, if you're using a PicoPSU 80W, you'll probably limited to 2 drives anyway.

However, unless you're after extremely small form factors, it's possible to build microATX rigs which idle very close to that and would allow you some leeway in case you want to do something else. By the way, if you're willing to wait, Zacate might make for a nice alternative.

Zacate is looking similar with its 4-Sata port limit though, but I only need one hard drive connected now, possibly a second in the next couple months, and its taken awhile for even that, so I think I've decided I'm good with the Sata amount on Atom. Another year (maybe longer) and I'll get a raid card and maybe upgrade to a 120W PicoPSU?? I digress, I need this for now.

So I'll jump on the Atom with only 1 hard drive, its all I need now, two soon, and small = good for me right now.
So bundle 80W PicoPSU, power cord, Atom 510e on the MSI Wind board here. Seem good?

EDIT: The board has a spot for a 4-pin CPU power plug, and PicoPSU does not. Is this a problem?

Yes, 4 pin connector is usually CPU power.

As previously said, you'll need a molex to 4pin adapter; PicoPSU's were at first build for VIA boards that didn't have 4pin plugs on the board.

About AMD vs Atom and powering it thru a 80W PSU. The Atom will work, no doubt about it. I'm also of the opinion an Atom DC + RAM can't possibly go over 20W unless it's "helped" by a very inefficient PSU (such as mine).

The AMD rig... some math is in order. I've read about some folks that busted their PicoPSUs although they were well ventilated and the rig didn't surpass PSU's rated power - the reason not all that power can be given thru the +12V rail (and AMD/Intel regular CPUs are powered only thru the +12V rail)
Here's a manual of a 120W PicoPSU I've used for a while:
http://resources.mini-box.com/online...25V-manual.pdf
You'll notice it can take 6A on the +12V rail, which makes for a grand total of 72W @12V. An Athlon X2 has a TDP of 65W, and other components are likely to pull from the +12V (search Xbitlabs.com for HDD's per-rail Amp intake).
I doubt even my 120W PicoPSU could power a stock Athlon X2 setup. However with undervolting (and at worst with underclocking) it may be done; some graphics memory radiators on the PicoPSU's mosfets to help with the cooling and it should be an efficient and stable setup. It's obvious a 80W PicoPSU would cut it short, the risk is too great you won't be able to reduce peak CPU power consumption enough to fit the power envelope.

Bottom line: my preference goes towards undervolted AMD + 120W PicoPSU, but if you don't wanna take the chance or the 120W PSU is over-budget the Atom setup can get the job done just fine. Imho if you have only a green HDD, if you try to stream simultaneously on 3-4 devices it's not gonna be the CPU or the network that will limit you, the HDD access time will become an issue ahead of the others.

I think you should think a little more about upgradeability...

This is 150w with the cpu connector... With this you are safe... even with an extra sata card...
Or if space allows it, a SFF psu:

3-4 Simultaneous streams, probably not. 1-2 most likely, but we will see.
And plans for the hard drive have changed. Looks more like I'll be running 2x1TB Caviar Blacks I have instead, probably Raid0.

I know I was leaning towards the Atom, but I think I will get that Delta 160W power supply and the AMD build. Unless there are any better PSUs around this area I'll just do that.
