FSB wall w/ Q9650 and 780i SLI

Thread Starter
I have a q9650 that his a FSB around 2000. Won't boot no matter what the voltage at either 6x multiplier or 9x. I'm currently pushing 1.4v through the FSB (the most my evga 780i will let me). I have plenty of room to work with in terms of temperature and Vcore. This CPU is stable at 4.3 ghz vcore-1.4(something). Is there anything I can do to get past the 2000 FSB wall? Volt mod, custom bios? Anything at all I can do to get 4.5ghz. I know the CPU can do it if I could post with this MB.

As much as I hate to say it, 500 FSB (2000/4) is about as high as you will go on a 780i board. There are many boards that will do 500+, but the 780i ain't it.

Others may have some suggestions, but in my opinion, it's just very unlikely.

Oh, and welcome to OCN.

I've been looking over motherboards to push the FSB further and the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P seemed to be the best choice. Is this the best choice for a q9650 with a FSB >500? Anyone know where I can purchase one online nowadays?

i managed to get 502FSB on my Rampage Formula X48 motherboard. It took an immense amount of tweaking and i had to play with CPU and NB skews which eventually got me there.

You really have to do more than just voltage increases to get over 500FSB on most boards. It a hell of a lot of work, i must have used 6 hours one night to get it bootable.

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1227455

My tips are these:

Increase FSB termination voltage
Increase North bridge voltage
Make sure your ram is not running too fast
If you can adjust the CPU and NB skews set them to 300ps and 200ps respectively

Or search for people who have gotten 500FSB on your mainboard and find out what their setting were.

If you`re going for CPU-Z validation (benching) then yes you need a P45 mobo..

EP45-UD3P (or UD3R if not planning on CrosFire)..

Also P5Q Premium/Deluxe/E modells could serve you well..

But if you`re going for stable FSB 500MHz+ then there`s no mobo that can give you stable FSB over 500MHz mark..

CHEERS..
