Question regarding AMD rma and thermal paste

Thread Starter
I have been working on a problem with my pc for a few weeks now. Please see this post for more info. Anyways I have a big issue. Today I plan on calling AMD since they have not responded to my rma request. I tested it in another mb and it also didn't work but if I tell them this I am admitting one of 2 things. Either I used thermal paste which voids the warranty or I reused the stock fan without cleaning it and reapplying thermal paste which I don't know if it voids the warranty but it certainly is a big no-no. What should I do? Or should I just forget about telling them that I did this in which case I have less proof and maybe they will say it's the memory or the mb. Or can I prove it in another way?

I don't understand, they say "you aren't allowed to use thermal paste"? That doesn't make any sense.

IMHO it sounds like you were being a diligent consumer and testing every angle prior to returning the chip. I'd just not mention most everything to AMD and return it.

Out of curiosity do you happen to have a spare AM3 cpu laying around you can throw in your rig to test if it really is the cpu?

Well get someone on the phone and tell them the situation, you dont have to tell them you overclock or used other paste. Just say "I've recently bought a cpu and ive been getting errors. No bent pins etc etc etc. I used the stock cooler." If they ask about the thermal paste, just say you used what came with the processor. Usually they'll go ahead and approve your RMA.

Well I tested it on a good working pc and It had basically the same problem. I do have an athlon 64 x2 6400+, but since it's only a 2 core cpu and the problem is occurring on the 5th core, I highly doubt it will tell me anything. I mean after all the cpu works fine on 5 cores. But I want all 6 of the cores that I paid for.

Go ahead and give them a call when they're open then. Just mention your RMA number and state your problem. Say it isnt working as it should and they should approve your RMA.

You know the funny thing is that I said that the thermal paste voids the warranty because I read about it in many forums such as this one but as you may have noted that is from 2003. And then there is this forum where someone was instructed to use thermal paste as long as it wasn't artic silver. And then here is the warranty link for my processor and it says nothing about thermal paste. It only talks about the heatsink/fan.

So to make things short, does anyone know about this because I would really like to be able to tell amd about how I switched the processor on another board?
