Here's a bit of interesting news you may have missed during the Holidays. Word has it that an active Internet connection is no longer required to play Ubisoft games. PC Gamer UK reports that the French publisher released an update that removes the necessity for some of Ubi's games to have an Internet connection in order to be played.

There's no need to be constantly connected, so why bother implementing such a stupid idea? I don't understand how this passed in the first place.

From what I can gather from the article, I think it means all. Do you know any that still use the DRM?

you are still required to have an Internet connection to authenticate when the game boots.
Still a FAIL.

I would much rather have to be connected while it boots then on 100% of the time. This I don't mind that much and can see as a nice comprimise. Only problem is it still alienates players that do not have internet from playing their games. Step in the right direction and hopefully they are working on an alternative to allow everyone access to their games regardless of if they have internet or not.

Well this is a step in the right direction. Though I wonder if they will do it for all new releases or just after a game has been out for a while.

Oh, this means I can play and enjoy Assassins Creed on the PC. Yay! I refused to buy it while that BS was on there.

Called it. This was the reason I've been boycotting Ubisoft (that and the abysmal quality for FarCry 2 that made it unplayable on my PC). Maybe I'll reconsider my boycott...maybe.

How long until publishers realize that some DRM will lose them more money than any piracy they might see? Besides, they'll still see piracy with any DRM that doesn't require a server connection (like MMOs, multiplayer games).

All drm should be removed and never considered again because it will always fail. For as long as we can edit code and software is available then nothing will ever be uncrackable, it's absurd to think otherwise let alone spend thousands on implementing such restrictions and after all it is only the paying who suffer.
