Q9550 overclocking advice

Thread Starter
In my sig rig i'm overclocking my Q9550 (recently purchased on ebay).

I am currently running an overclock of:

8.5 x 436, 3.7 GHz
vCore 1.28125V
RAM is 800 overclocked to 872, 5-5-5-18 not overvolted, w/ a multi of 2.
nothing else is tweaked

I am a relative novice at overclocking but i've gotten my chip P-95 stable (3.5 hrs; max temp 41C normally 36C-38C) and am having trouble pushing the chip further. I haven't played around with it for a while but it seems like my RAM is a limiting factor (whenever I get it up a good deal higher 890, 900+) I can't boot into windows or post, etc.

I never built this system for overclocking so I know the components aren't the best but am wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions to push the chip/RAM further.

Many thanks.

wow that d14 is a hell of a cooler... 41C after 3 hours?

To be perfectly honest... that board probably wont even do more than 450ish FSB.

I ran an ep35c-ds3r and even with most of the onboard stuff off... I would randomly hard lock or bsod with anything north of 451mhz fsb w/ a q9550. Got a bit more out of it with my e7200... but the multiplier makes it easier to OC so there is no need.

And like you said your ram is definitely going to be an issue here... I have never had much luck running ddr2-800 over ~900ish... and it require a bump to the northbridge of like .1V and i believe I was running the ram at +.2V over the spec on the label... thats still only going to get you 450ish fsb...

To get my OC north of 3.8/3.9 I ended up running corsair dominator 1066mhz pieces at ~920mhz with tight timings of 4-4-4-10 @ 2.1V

To get over 4.0 I ended up moving up to ddr3 and a p45 board.

Thanks for the advice but at this point I'm pretty sure it's the RAM (no surprise). I've tried about all that I feel comfortable doing atm and can't seem to get her stable over 3.7GHz (not bad anyway). Even 3.72GHz fails P95.

I've run P95 for 17 hours at 3.7GHz so I'm pretty happy with that.

cheers

Bump northbridge voltage by .1v, RAM to 2,1v, loose timings, and see if it works. Whats your vcore?

EDIT: try and raise your vcore to 1,35 and see if it works if it does, lower your vcore to something lower but stable
