[VTZ] Intel Core i5 2300 2400 2500K Sandy Bridge Review

A little over a year ago now we saw the introduction of the Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 LGA 1156 processors which replaced the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad predecessor. These chips paved the way for the mainstream market. Delivering excellent performance to enthusiasts who are perhaps on a budget. LGA1156 basically offers excellent performance at a lower price-point compared to the LGA 1366 Core i7. But, some 15 months on and we have a successor to the short-lived LGA1156 Core i7, i5, i3.

First!

Reading now.

These are looking pretty good. I may have to upgrade from my Q9650. Maybe get a water cooling setup as well. I wonder, though, why only 2 6GB/s SATA ports?

Budget wise... I think the 2500K is a winner. I can't wait to buy one for my 2nd rig!!

... They also tested it against a stock SB 2500k.

So basically a Stock clock (2.6GHz) 920 is on par with a stock clocked 2500k (Which, btw, is clocked much higher, at 3.3GHz, roughly 30% higher).

considering we're comparing current gen top of the line, to next gen's mainstream, not bad. (remember this is 4x2 via HT cores vs just 4 cores for the SB). But not apples to apples. A 2600k vs a 950 will really show us what we're dealing with, and I suspect at stock, the results will be none to impressive, but the overclocking will be where the war is won. at least until LGA 2011 hits (which is what I'm waiting for).

... and they said OC'ing would die on SB.

2011 will be performance market too but I expect extreme performance. SB i7 is mid-high range.

Here is what i am continually getting out of these reviews. If you are currently running a 1366 chip you have absolutely no reason to move to SB. If you are on and AM3 or 775, this is a great chip to upgrade to. If you are on 1156 you, i think, would also be better off waiting for ivy bridge. 1156-->1155 is a toss up though.
