I've read the reviews saying how the 2600k trumps all, yada yada yada. What about the e5620?

Reading the reviews I would no where near say it trumps all. In fact I really wonder what is happening with chip, the reviews seems to be all over the place. It is very good cpu.
As for your question. If you already have the hardware and not willing to spend the money on a new motherboard, then yes, it is better if you can get it super cheap. But if you welling to get new parts and willing to say mid stream, no extreme overclocking, then sandy is really good option.
I need total power. I could really careless about sandy, because in most cases it does not actually have brute power to even come close to the 980x.
But if you are looking for a new rig and have the budget for it, sandy all the way. If you are like me and just get what ever the best price for performance, then the 1366 line has a lot of old stuff, with old cheap price tags. Sandy is going to have new higher price tags.
