Should i fold?

Thread Starter
Okay, let me start off by saying i have no idea what folding is beyond loaning your computer to programs that utilise it's hardware. Usually in the interests of scientific curiosity/research etc.

Now i've been upgrading my rig since i bought it, and have gotten a little carried away at times and made a few mistakes along the way which has left me with enough spare parts to almost build an entire system.

My latest upgrades will leave me with a spare x4 955 c3, Arctic Freezer Rev.2, 700W Arctic Power PSU, DVD-RW Drive, 4GB HyperX ram, spare case/fans, and a GTX 460.

I was planning on selling all of these and being done with it, but with a cheap hard drive and motherboard i could essentially build two seperate systems - both at fairly high specs too.

My questions are pretty simple:

Is it possible to have a dedicated folding machine which can work side-by-side with a system rig?

Could i, at certain times, have both machines running together for folding?

Any good beginners guides to setting up a folding rig.

And most importantly - why is it a good idea to fold and how easily can it be done, or should i just sell my stuff?

What is folding?
The 460 is a good GPU to start folding on.
You can make a dedicated machine for folding, though it will not be combined together. Each piece of hardware needs its own client running.

Short Answer:Yes.
Long Answer: Yeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss.

Getting setup for folding is very easy, Getting some of the more advanced functions working the way you want to can be a little more difficult, but still relatively easy.

Think of folding like this.. any time your computer would have an idle clock.. it's used for folding. In theory this means you can use your computer completely as normal and not notice any lag. I never turn folding off my main rig even for gaming. I turn it off for benchmarking, and or if I have a very CPU intensive function that I want completed quickly, e.g. music of video conversion..

My folding only rig just runs my i7 at 100% for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
My sig rig is always folding as well. Some people turn their folding on/off when they are away/home just depending on your preferences, system noise, system heat output, etc etc. Just make sure your system is stable! Folding can be very demanding if running at 100% on all cores, watch temps closely! Most importantly have fuN!

everyone should fold but not all people do, so we have to make up for the loss of people who arent folding by folding twice as hard

That's subjective; some people would say having a computer is a waste of money. Why is using it for Folding any more of a waste than using it for gaming?

Yes, but how much depends on many factors; electric rates, how long you intend to Fold in a day, and how much you use your computer already.

Not at all; as long as the temps are within the allowable ranges, they will happily go at 100% without any additional wear on the components. Only excessive heat will shorten their life.

That's just stupid. Since when do you decide what's boring and what isn't?

I've no problem arguing on the above points, but what you find boring certainly isn't to the rest of us.
