Should i fold? - Page 3

Yes.

I find it rewarding and I feel I can contribute to something bigger.

Some people fold for loved ones, others fold for the competitive aspect. Others fold for the sense of community folding engenders. What ever the reason and how ever often they fold, most people find it worthwhile.

If you choose to start folding, we would welcome you and you will find a wealth of assistance here.

Folding... the life you help could be your own.

If you think ocn is great, wait till you start folding. The people who fold on this site are some of the nicest, funniest, and wackiest people on this site, and usually, there aren't a whole lot of flame wars in the folding section.

I for one, fold for my girlfriend, whose family has a history of cancer, breast cancer to be exact. If there was ever anything I could do to reduce her chances of getting it or her chances of getting rid of it if she ever had it, I would do anything. I'm no genius, and I also don't have a lot of money, so this is the best way I can contribute.

Its the community we have here. I tried folding for Gamespot but theres no community so it felt a bit pointless.

That is also why I love the folding section. I think about 1,200 of my posts have been in the folding section.

Oh, and Lyster if you haven't read about it yet the whole thing works something like this:

Proteins, the building blocks of life, are folded into specific shapes based on the genetic code that produces them. These shapes are very complex and are essential to the functioning of life. When they don't fold right, they can't work right. When proteins don't work right, the life form that needs them gets "sick".

We know these sicknesses as a number of diseases, "Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers" (F@H website).

Folding at Home seeks to use your computer to "understand" the complex folding of proteins (GPUs are good at manipulating 3D shapes) and and the diseases that arise when they misfold.

Hope this helps a little. Sorry for the broad strokes, bio-majors.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think i'm gonna give it a go.

Sounds like a fun way to spend my computer time and maybe a chance to learn some stuff too. Been wanting to do something worthwhile with my rig ever since i started building it, gaming only has a limited appeal imo.

WAIT.. you're getting paid??? Alright whers my paycheck???

I fold because I have lost every female family member of my blood relations to cancer. My Grandfather died of cancer, mother, sister, 2 aunts, 2 grandmothers. None of them smoked a day in their life(I am the only smoker in 2 generations)
