I know what you mean. That resolution has got such little attention and the thing is if more people actually saw one in action they would look at it as a necessity vs a want for gaming. Id love to see a 120hz 3D panel at that size and rez. If you get sick of waiting for one like I did I can definitley recommend the LG, it's a great panel.
IMO the larger screens are more for work than play, I got my U2711 for work first - gaming on it was a perk.
even then, the best part of my U2711 for gaming isn't its 2560x1440 resolution, its the image quality of its IPS panel, and there are some pretty good IPS panels at lower resolutions available.
That being said, I far and away prefer the faster performance of my XL2410T's TN panel @ 120Hz for my faster paced games (I prefer shooters) and powering games @ 1080p to try and keep up with that 120Hz is strenuous enough, I hate to think about the rig needed to power 1600p @ 120Hz.

no, not for 2560x1600 @ 120Hz, only Display Port can provide enough bandwidth. Dual link DVI can do 2560x1600 @ 60Hz, but not 120Hz. HDMI can't do either.
