Why RAID at all? - Page 4

Also, are you just using the motherboard SATA ports? Because if so, you can't do any of the combinations I previously stated. (My board has the same SATA port setup)

You could do RAID 10 with 6 drives on the blue SATA ports, and RAID 1 with 2 drives on the white SATA ports.

This would tolerate up to 4 failures, and you'd get triple the r/w performance on the RAID 10, and regular performance on the RAID 1.

raid 5 your work, best mix of redundancy and performance for what you have (you can also hot swap drives in raid 5 with no data loss, just a preformace hit

this would give 7 tb of space and redundancy

Fixed, as only the capacity of one drive is needed.

A hot swap would be a good idea if you needed to replace the drive ASAP with no downtime whatsoever, but for a home server environment you don't really require iron clad uptime. Therefore, you would benefit more greatly by actually using the drive in the array instead of a hot backup.

When I saw RAID 10, I naturally said WTH is that! It seems the original Berkeley method of classification is out per

The original "Berkeley" RAID classifications are still kept as an important historical reference point and also to recognize that RAID Levels 0-6 successfully define all known data mapping and protection schemes for disk. Unfortunately, the original classification caused some confusion due to assumption that higher RAID levels imply higher redundancy and performance. This confusion was exploited by RAID system manufacturers, and gave birth to the products with such names as RAID-7, RAID-10, RAID-30, RAID-S, etc. The new system describes the data availability characteristics of the RAID system rather than the details of its implementation.

That's something else I wondered about. My ASUS board is bit shy of SATA ports - only 6, so 2 for my SSD's, 3 for my optical and blue ray storage, and only 1 for a magnetic HD.

Yikes! So I added an expansion card for 3.0 GBS, an additional 4 ports. I HAVE NOT tested it so I do not know if it functions well or not.
