Why RAID at all? - Page 6

This might be exactly what you need. A little pricey, but it's perfect. Fits 4 drives, has it's own controller that supports RAID 10. Just need a free PCI express slot, which I'm sure you have.

I don't think you can RAID USB drives.
I think I said that in an amazingly unclear way. Thanks for not telling me what a silly @$$ I was. Here is what I was thinking of:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...+4+bay&x=0&y=0

Seems like that kills a whole bunch of birds with one stone. Got some follow up questions if you don't shoot down my zeppelin.

I totally think this would be just right. Next step for me is to read the reviews of it. As you probably know, most of these external enclosures get dumped on for one reason or another - and by some pretty technical people. So caveat emptor, eh?

Speed of an external equal to or superior to 4 internal HD's??

Should be equal, but it all depends on the controller. It's most likely equal though.

Would that be the PCI-e card and are they interchangeable? (I think not.)

Right now, reading reviews like a maniac.

Yes and yes, as long as the ports on the I/O plate are the same.

But I'm sure the one it comes with is fine. It's most likely the drives that will be the bottleneck, not the controller.

These appear to be the majors:
1) Rosewill
2) Mediasonic
3) Sans Digital

Biggest complaints across the board seem to be:
1) Controller incompatibility
2) Controller failure
3) Crappy documentation and "we dunno" support

Whimsically asked: Does Corsair make these darned things? Corsair's support is second to none!

Question: Why for a 4-bay are the prices all over the board; big spread over high to low?
