Is this actually a macro lens: TAMRON AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD Macro

i have seen it listed on many sites as macro lens but it is 70-300mm . I thought they needed to be 105mm etc not a range of distance.

I have also seen lots of other tamron lenses with the tag "macro" in the title and are ranges of 24mm-135mm is this going to be a good macro lens?

It may be out of your budget, but this is one of the most popular macro lenses available atm:

There aren't any true 1:1 zoom "macros." The farthest I've heard is Nikon's 70-180 f/4.5-5.6, which gets 1:1.32, although you can use a diopter lens to get to 1:1. However, the lens is just a bit pricey... The lens you mentioned focuses to 1:2 at 300 mm, which is not quite macro.
