Windows ME had heaps of bugs but a lot of its rep was caused by bad/cheap RAM in OEMs rig as well, some people used it perfectly fine.

XP was horrible at launch.

Win7 = Vista R2.
And going from the version number of this (6.2.79xx.0), this will be Vista R3/7 R2... (Vista = 6.0, 7 = 6.1 whereas older versions increased the main, first, number.)

I don't care as long as they don't introduce a new version of DirectX.

My perception: Windows =DirectX.

I disagree, here is why:

Windows tick-tock releases as pointed out in other posts have generally been good-bad beats. Vista is a good example from XP.

I welcome changes, but if Windows 8 is a success IMO this will be good and push Microsoft to really work on improving its image for the most popular consumer OS on the market. I'm not expecting to move OS's for a while but if I beta test 8 like I did 7 and Vista, I may very well jump ship as both iterations mentioned were improvements. They were just buggy and needed a lot of work arounds. Now being someone who can work around problems and enjoy the benefits after said work, I don't mind being an early adopter of new stuff.

I see the trend, but I also hope it is broken due to MS trying to step it up.

Windows 8 should be getting rid of the registry, and also the decrease in performance that all versions Windows experience after a long time. Windows 8 will be a necessary stepping stone.

I used to theme the hell out of Windows XP. When I finally made the switch to Windows 7 (skipped Vista) I was surprised how difficult it was to make major modification to Windows 7 GUI.

I am glad I am not the only one that has noticed the dead horse that is Windows 7 themes.

I for one really hope something like this will happen.

Windows 7 is a great OS but it almost feels as if they have been patching up their OS since Windows 95, just adding new things to it and not changing what's at the heart.

I feel that Microsoft can only go too far basing their operating systems off the same core and at some point they will need to change it for real.

It's like the Source Engine. They can patch it up, make it look good, etc. but what they really need is to start again.

Until I see some real information about what Windows 8 is going to look like, I'm not going to guess what it will be like.

Personally, it's just a half assed grab for cash.

"Guys! The adoption rate of Windows 7 is awesome, but you know what would make us even more money? Release ANOTHER operating system!"
